Does anyone know where some of the best or better schools are to go for neuroscience as an undergrad or something really close to it? does uchicago, columbia, or uva have a good neuroscience program? Any other schools?

I'll give your question a shot. I'll be an incoming freshman at Northwestern going into neuroscience.

I don't know much about UVA, but I do know Chicago and Columbia have fairly strong programs. Columbia's grad program is ranked in the top 10 by the NRC. I've heard (anecdotally) that Columbia doesn't always offer a ton of opportunities for undergrads in science, but I could be wrong. I've heard Chicago does do a good job of opening things up for undergrads in the sciences, but again, I could be wrong. But I don't think you'd be ill-served by either school, and I'd bet you'd also get a great neuro education at UVA too.

Other schools to consider would be: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, Johns Hopkins, UPenn, Washington University in St. Louis, Duke, Dartmouth, Brown. There are plenty of good LACs for neuroscience too, and the list of schools I wrote is by no means exhaustive. After my college search, I pretty much concluded that almost any top university will be at least decent for neuroscience and many top LACs offer great programs as well. If you're competetive for UChicago and Columbia, you've got a lot of options.

If you have questions as to how I made that list, feel free to PM me.

I've heard good things about Emory.

Judging by the schools you've mentioned, I take it you're looking for small to medium size schools with an intellectual atmosphere.

That said, I'll also recommend Colgate, Amhest, Cornell, Hamilton, Johns Hopkins, Middlebury, Northwestern....

Baylor also has a rather strong program, so it's worth considering as a safety.

Oh. And a couple other (slightly lower-tier) schools to look are the University of Miami and Syracuse. Miami in particular is very strong in the biological sciences.

Neuroscience is a very popular and developed major at Brown. You will get some great student/faculty at Brown that you wouldn't normally find at many research university that people normally recommend i.e. Harvard, JHU, etc.

Brandeis university has amazing neuroscience says the fiske book.

I know it may not seem like it, but Oberlin has a really good neuroscience program. I think it may also be one of the oldest, but I'm not too sure on that one...

UVA's Neuroscience Department is pretty strong. Only 25 students are admitted into its program every year.

^where this is from, collegehelp?

The Gourman rankings are 20 years old and have absolutely no credibility.

MIT has the largest neuroscience facility in the world. If you want leading edge research and faculty there is simply no better place. It has about a 3/1 student/faculty ratio for undergrads.

[MIT : Brain and Cognitive Sciences](The MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences | Brain and Cognitive Sciences)

MIT, Duke ([Undergraduate Neuroscience Program](http://www.unp.aas.duke.edu)), and Penn (Biological Basis of Behavior - [Biological Basis of Behavior Program](Neuroscience Program - Home | Neuroscience))

duke has poured even more time into the neuroscience program. it’s officially a a full-blown major :)

I believe those lists came from Rugg’s Recommendations.

Also offering neuroscience: UC Davis, UC Irvine, Dartmouth.

I can second (third? fourth?) MIT, having being a neuro & cog sci major there. Rice, Duke, Johns Hopkins, and most of the Ivies are very good.

Some excellent but slightly less competitive options: Brandeis, UPitt, UCSD. Boston University has an interesting systems & computational neuroscience & cognitive science + AI and EE program, called Cognitive & Neural Systems.

Check out Brown. Strong program and faculty, much interdisciplinary work going on. Huge opportunities for undergrad research at Brown.
