Neuroscience Major, anybody?

Is anybody here on the forums pursuing a neuroscience major at UT, or is in the major currently? Let me know what your thoughts are and if you've already completed it, how strenuous the workload was and generalities.

Thanks!

I am considering it as a double major. I am doing computer science for sure.

I’m doing Neuroscience this fall at UT. I’m excited for it because of how interdisciplinary it seems.

I also applied to the CNS honors, but I haven’t heard back yet.

Bump, interested to hear what others have to say about this

I’m a Neurobiology major here who wished they had the Neuroscience major back then. Basically taking more neuro-based courses than you would for Neurobio majors.

Xcellerator, How do you rate the neuroscience professors/lecturers at UT ? From what you have seen how is the research opportunities in neuroscience for UT students

I’m interested in this as well since I will be majoring in Neuroscience this fall.

Yeah, I was actually considering doing a neurobiology major since it wouldn’t be so spread out over each core science (bio, chem, phys). I guess since this is only the second (or third?) year that UT is offering a neuroscience major, not too many people know about it.

Anybody who is in the HSH program doing Neuroscience ?

I applied, but still waiting for HSH.

They’re pretty good. Also, plenty of research opportunities available in almost any area. Been in my current lab for 2+ years; almost 3 years of doing research…

I’ve applied for undergraduate transfer admission to Fall 2013 semester with first and second choice majors of neuroscience and biochemistry, respectively. My application status changed from “complete” to “in review” at some point over the past 24-48 hours, but no further developments. I continue anxiously awaiting a verdict, logging into MyStatus on an almost obsessive basis at this point.

I know biochem is quite selective, but since the neuroscience undergrad program has only been in existence at UT for a handful of semesters, I have absolutely no clue whatsoever what sort of competition pool I’ll be up against here. I’ve been unable to locate any stats for this major specifically (e.g. average number of applicants, number of available spots, etc.), so I’m going a bit crazy at the moment. I’ve applied to Yale as well (among others) which has a transfer acceptance rate of ~2%, and I’m not bothered by that one at all because I’m at least able to calculate my odds and figure out where I stand.

Has anyone maybe stumbled upon these data for UT? If not, any/all insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks all, and good luck!!!

WhatevDude - What are your stats? Biochemistry and Neuroscience aren’t that selective due to being in CNS. As long as you have a 3.5+ GPA, you’re good…

CNS isn’t that selective? Really? I’ve known a few people with GPA’s above 3.5 that didn’t get in, not to mention all the fuss that the dean has made in recent years regarding Perry’s many auto-admission laws for an ever-growing freshman class and how it’s diminishing available slots for qualified transfers. Maybe I’m just being paranoid and/or pessimistic, but I’m trying to be as realistic as possible and not get my hopes up too much before I receive a decision. My current in-school GPA at ACC is 3.89 after 55 hours completed with my only two B’s coming from the poor decision to take Trig, of all things, online in the summer, and the other from art because the prof deducted a letter grade for having more than 2 absences (grrr!); without those it would be 4.0 @ACC, including several Honors, math & science courses, (currently taking calc I & Ochem II).

My first go-round in college like a decade ago @ age 17 was not so great… 55-hrs earned in LVN nursing licensure program w/ a 3.024; I graduated that program, passed my boards on the first try and have worked as a nurse ever since, until my return to college last year - but that old GPA is abysmal.

Per UT’s transfer coursework eval scale, that leaves me sitting at a 3.76 w/ 62 transferable hours, technically classified as a freshman until I complete calc II, which I presume will be this summer.

LoR’s x3 from Bio, Govt, & Phil prof. Member of PTK Honor Society, ACS and AAAS, among others. Lots of volunteer work. 1 quality essay, the other decent. ACT from 2001 was not great: 26 composite w/ 30 in writing portion.

But if you say a 3.5 is all it takes, you probably didn’t care to hear all that. Since you’re an aspiring scientist, you won’t mind if I ask you to cite your source, right? :)

Trying to bump up this old thread to see if there is any latest info on the competitiveness of the Neuroscience Major at UT Austin. Anyone with a fresh perspective? D is interested in pursuing premed at UT with Neuroscience major, and got the admission letter last week. So, trying to find more insights…

I got into neuroscience major for class of 2021, and I don’t think it is that competitive a major. However, since many people are interested in neuro major, it is not easy either.
