How difficult/rigorous is the neuroscience major at Dartmouth? Especially from a pre med perspective.

Also, would you recommend neuroscience as a pre med major? I want to be a neurologist and I love biology and math somewhat so neuroscience seems like it would be a perfect major

Hi! I’m a third-year neuro major who also happens to be pre-med. I have to say that the difficulty of the classes I’ve taken for my major has really varied from class to class, sometimes dramatically. Certain classes were real snoozers (one “higher-level” class I stopped attending about 30% of the way through and was fine), and others have kept me on my toes, being just as time-consuming as orgo. Most, however, have been really thought-provoking, and all have had their interesting moments. The prof is definitely the determining factor when it comes to the the atmosphere of the class, and you can figure out the professors’ respective reputations pretty quickly either by asking upperclassmen or perusing the course guide.

I think neuro is a great pre-med major at Dartmouth! There is a ton of overlap between major classes and pre-reqs; the only pre-req that doesn’t go toward completing the major is orgo (and biochem and English, but the first isn’t required for most med schools, and the second you’ll take anyway as a freshman). In fact, if there hadn’t been so much overlap, I probably wouldn’t have decided to be pre-med (since I had so many of the pre-reqs done anyway, I decided to explore it further and ended up really loving the prospect of being a doctor). Being able to kill two birds with one stone has also enabled me to pursue a minor in the humanities.

That said, you won’t have to declare your major until sophomore year, so keep your “direction” in mind but your mind open. Take a few neuro classes your freshman year and see what you think! Also Google “Dartmouth Neuroscience” for more info (you want to “Major in Neuroscience” link), and feel free to PM me/post more specific questions as they come. Hope this helps!
