Neuroscience Programs

I didn’t really read through all of it, but does Harvard have a good neuroscience/neurobiology program?

Harvard has excellent life sciences in general.

Since this was my major, I figure I’ll plug MIT, especially since for some reason nobody has mentioned it. I think it’s especially good if you want to do systems/computational/mathematical neuroscience. There’s plenty of opportunity for undergrads to do research (as 80% of MIT undergrads in general do research at MIT labs). From the background that I got and the name recognition of the school, I got a fellowship to do computational neuroscience research in Switzerland one summer, which has been helpful even as I moved into computer science after graduation.

My son is a neuroscience major at Brown. Although he doesn’t post here, I can relay questions to him. I know he loved his neuroscience class last semester and is excited to take neurobiology next semester. He seems very happy with his decision to attend Brown.

I visited MIT recently and they seem to have a really strong cognitive neuro program, which is what I’m interested in! I visited the McGovern Institute for Brain Research; it’s a beautiful building and it got me psyched about their neuroscience programs.

I’d also like to mention UC San Diego, since V.S. Ramachandran teaches there. His book ‘Phantoms in the Brain’ is what got me interested in cog sci. :] Too bad I’m not interested in going to school in Cali, haha.

what about stanford…?

Bump, I’m curious about Stanford as well.

If i am head down the premed track and majoring in neuroscience, would it be better to go to
UCSD
Wesleyan
or
USC?

I would say UCSD but that is personal opinion.

I have a feeling that while the department at Pomona is very good and very personal it wouldn’t be great for someone looking for research. I believe the whole department has only 8 professors. I could be wrong.

That is true.. a small liberal arts school is very limited in terms of resources..
but is it absolutely necessary or beneficial to do undergrad research?
I was thinking of Wesleyan–how does that weigh with the others on the neuroscience program?

so if i am going to apply to med school, i should choose an lac?
