I am a senior in HS and I have decided to change my preferred major from MechE to Neuroscience (total 180, I know…).
The reason for this is that I simply cannot see myself in a career that relies solely on math and physics. I enjoy both math and physics, but feel that as a career it is just not for me. I’ve always been interested in psychology, how the brain and nervous system works, etc. Also, I’ve always been interested in wanting to help find the causes and cures for things like Alzheimer’s and such. MechE was something that my dad brought up to me and pushed me to do (which I appreciate, but it’s more what he wanted me to do rather than what I want to do).
I did talk to our school psychology teacher yesterday and he explained a little bit to me and was very helpful. I plan on talking to our Biomed teacher, who majored in Neuroscience, very soon.
My plan is to get a master’s degree in Neuroscience (obviously I’ll decide whether I want to do cognitive/developmental/etc later). Then, as I work in the field, I would like to work on my PhD. I’ve heard that sometimes companies help pay for schooling if you’re working on them. I’m not really concerned with getting into a job because the university that I’m going to tends to get students into the field really well by integrating them with internships and getting them involved with companies & the industry as early as freshman year.
I have done a lot of research, but I would like to get some advice and the jist of everything from people on here (because I know how knowledgeable CC people are). If anyone has majored in NS or knows about it, can they tell me about any experiences or tips? Is it easy/hard? What should I expect? Just some general things that I may not be able to find online.
Thanks!
