Neurosurgey, which schools?

Where would be the best place to do premed, med school, and residency if one is to become a neurosurgeon?

Easy there- take it one step at a time.

You don’t choose a college or med school based on your presumed specialty of the future. While being a neurosurgeon might sound great now, you have no idea if you’ll have the interest in the brain, the desire to spend 7 years as a resident, enjoy being in the OR, have the board scores or fulfill any other 10000 steps between where you are now and opening up the envelope on Match Day to find out you successfully matched into a neurosurg residency.

Thanks, but what I’m asking is which schools would put me on the best track towards becoming a Neurosurgeon.

I am a one year away from recieving CNA certification through my high school (joint program between my high school, a local college, and local hospital) and have been through the hectic conditions in an OR. I am pretty sure I’ll major in premed when I get to college, unless something happens along the way.

The reason I am thinking about going into neurosurgery is not because of the money (though great!) it is just that the inner workings of the mind are unbelievably fascinating. What affects memory and the hypothalmus? Why does the cortex contain 75% of the brains working neurons? I can see myself being engrossed with the profession, and not get bored of it halfway through residency and having a mid-life crisis so to say.

Our family neurosurgeon went to Duke.

Sounds like neurology is more of a fit for you than neurosurgery. Where you go to college has only a minor effect on where you go to med school. Where you go to med school only has a minor effect on where you do your residency (unless you have a desire to stay put in a given region because you are comfortable there).

While a hospitals ranking in these fields is not necessarily equivalent to its talent in training residents, a lot of these hospitals do indeed have top neurosurg and neurology programs.

^ Thank you.
