Never been to Pennslyvania!

What are things you can do outside of Penn State, such as hiking, etc. I mean what kinds of outside of school activities do students engage themselves in? Is a car really important for an out of state student to have? I live about 5 hours away. How's the weather there? What is and how far is the nearest city to Penn State? Any points of interest?

Penn State has some outdoor clubs that you can join that will get you off campus. Otherwise you will have to take a bus to get around.

Son went there and really didn’t feel the need to leave the campus/town area while school was in session. Lots to do at State College IF you get involved. Really, it’s called happy valley because it is a great place to be.

You can grab greyhound buses to the major cities in Pa but it is more of a weekend get away (Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburg) at the least.

Usual weather is cold and windy in the winter with snow and nice during the spring and fall (60-70F). Summer can be hot.(90)

Thanks for the awesome feedback ! The more I learn about Penn State the more I wish to attend.

You cannot have a car on campus freshman year. And its cold. And it snows.

haha…it hasn’t snowed much this year, but it is cold from Nov-February. No worse than upstate NY, etc… On the bright side, it also is rarely horribly hot for very long in the summer!

On campus, there are sporting events, concerts, lectures from famous people, arboretum, intramurals, art events, etc… Off campus there are mostly activities for outdoors – skiing, hiking, swimming, . There is a mall outside town (pretty small) but even more shopping/eating in town. You won’t need to go anywhere to find something to do.

Nearest “big” city is Harrisburg, about 90 minute away. Pittsburgh is 3, Philly is 3ish depending on the day and how fast you drive. Greyhound buses and MegaBuses go there, and to NYC. There’s an Amtrak station in Lewistown, about 35 minutes from SC. And SC has an airport, too.

(I saw your post about financial aid. Don’t count on PSU to do a lot more than point you in the direction of loans.)

Kblitz: that really sucks ! I was going to ask for a car as my graduation gift, im practicing for my road test.

Greenbutton: the weather seems normal in comparison to where I reside now. And it seems like theres definitely alot to do. I wasn’t expecting alot but i guess I was wrong. It sounds like a really fun place to be. I’m very excited. It seems to me like its the best of both worlds. Thank you so much for mentioning the transportation and nearby cities. Thats great help. And many people are telling me not to rely on aid but i would be really upset if i can’t attend Penn State due to afforability Issues. And if everyone is right about very little aid I might have to reconsider going here.

Im from nyc too btw, specifically staten island so you can pm me if you have any other questions or just want to talk about psu :)

Kblitz: thank you, and im actually from new jersey but we are just across the hudson from nyc. So How do you like it so far, At penn state university park? I’m new to this site so dont really understand the whole pm concept. (not so good with the internet)

I mean i dont know where to go to pm you.

Dreamer2016 - if you click on kblitz’s screenname, the 2nd option down is to send a private message (PM).

okay thank you :)

If you like outdoor recreation, it is an ideal spot to go to college. There are tons of state parks, state forests, fishing creeks, hiking trails nearby. Just watch out for the gas wells to the north.
