Never told us grades...

Hello,

I am currently taking a class and have no idea how I am doing in the class. The only indicator I have is a grade I received on an essay I turned in about 7 weeks ago (I passed). Other than that, I have no idea my standing in the class and if I am passing.

The course is ten weeks and the class only knows one grade. The professor has been "too busy" to post grades. If for any reason I do not pass the class, is this enough standing to take it to my department? If I had know I wasn't doing good, I would have dropped it. Or is the professor's silence/ laziness an indicator that everything is fine? In other words, is it the professors responsibility to communicate grades?

Have you asked him how you’re doing?

Talk to him. This kind of stuff is exactly what office hours are for. It’s not the responsibility of the professor to keep track of your grades.

Well I hope someone is keeping track of grades! It might not be his or her responsibility to give progress reports, but if a student asks at any point what their grade currently is, the professor should be able to look it up and tell the student.

Anyone else reminded of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance?
