Has anyone taken this GE Cluster? I'm planning on being a Neuroscience major with a possible minor, so I'm trying to decide if I want to get my GE's taken care of early with a lot of work/reading/time, or not take it and fulfill them throughout my four years with more variety. Any input would be lovely.

Your orientation counselor will try to ram a cluster down your throat, but the general consensus is that they’re too much work for too little payoff. The best route is to take easy one-off GEs that you can screen using Bruinwalk to inflate your GPA.

Don’t take clusters.

I took HMT cluster and absolutely loved it and was a big GPA boost with the 6 units each quarter. No more writing II to worry about.

However, I don’t know much about myth cluster. I did take Classics 30 which, with Morgan, is pretty difficult.

I took Neverending Stories last year with Nagy, Jamison, and Kendrick. The class was a lot of work, reading wise (if i remember correctly it was almost 100 pages per lecture). The class is pretty easy though aside from the work load. There are no midterms or finals. 3 or 4 multiple choice quizzes which are pretty easy. If you go to lecture and take really good notes the quizzes will be a breeze. I even think you can get by not reading and still get good grades on the quizzes. There were two papers first quarter, I think 3 second quarter, and the amount for third quarter will very depending on who you took for your seminar. Your TA really makes a difference. Take Mac, Wayne, Sarrah or Anna in that order of preference. DO NOT Take Elizabeth Thornton. She is a terrible TA. I had Elizabeth first quarter and hated it as well as everyone else. I took Wayne for second and third quarter he’s a really good TA but he expects a lot out of your papers. Hope that helps

Don’t take GE clusters! Spreading out your GE’s over 4 years will make your schedule a lot more balanced, especially if you’re in a tough science major like Neuroscience. Believe me, I’m a Phy Sci major and balancing course work is important not only for good grades but also for your health as well.

For the Writing II requirement, you can simply fulfill it with easy classes like English 4 or Scandinavian 50W.

I think the consensus here is to not take a GE Cluster because it’s ALOT OF WORK and some people don’t think its worth it. You definitely will have to devout a lot of time to your cluster, because it is so much reading. I only ended up taking 3 classes a quarter last year including the cluster because it was so much work for me. Only take the cluster if you are really interested in it. I thought this one was worth it because i like mythology and I learned a lot. I also thought it was worth it because I got a bunch of ge credit, honors credit, 1 writing II class out of the way…but ultimately it is your decision. Take every word of advice with a grain of salt
