This is grad school, correct/

Yes, that list is for grad school.

Having overall rankings for engineering schools are fairly useless, unless you just want to get a sense of how the overall school is. What you'd want is how each program is ranked, since the department you're applying to has a bigger impact on your experience then what the university is like.

With that being said, I don't see a real need for rankings to be updated annually. Of course US News wants to do it for the money, but in general, the rankings are pretty stable. I'd doubt you'd get the wrong impression of the school if you go off of the 2004 rankings.

Would have loved to have seen GATech to go up :)

Sounds like a car model.

2009 list, ranked in 2007!
not really, but you get the idea ;)

Wow. That scared me until I read the second post. I almost had a hard attack, because I thought my school's engineering program dropped 9 spots.

lol does it really matter though?

I don't think 9 spots matters. If it drops 20 spots, then maybe, but the only reason I would worry is because I'd want to know exactly what caused that drop.

yeah, being ranked 13th, or 8th in any given year really says nothing, schools don't change overnight.

Can anyone also post the undergrad 2009 US News rankings please??

What if it continues to drop a few spots every year. That would really add up by the time I'm a senior.

Guys, I did engineering for undergrad/grad and I can tell you not none of us look at "overall" engineering ranking to decide where to apply for grad schools. Department ranking, however, is a much better one. USC provides the best example why this is wacky. It's number 8 on this overall ranking but if you look at the department ranking, USC has no (or maybe 1?) top-10 department. Look at the methodology carefully and you can see why.

Employers and grad schools don't look at US News rankings unless they're unfamiliar with your program. Applicants are the only people who use these. You can easily divide this list into groups of 10-15 schools and there wouldn't be much differences within each group. If USNWR did this though, nobody would buy the issue because many people concerned with admissions already know who is in what tier.

Employers/grad schools usually rely on their past experiences with your schools alumni and their knowledge of your program (at least moreso than rankings). They won't care if your school is ranked 15 or 25.

Rankings of graduate programs are even more ridiculous than undergrad because everybody is so specialized at that level. Even if a grad school is pretty good overall, it still may have a few specializations that are pretty poor. I had the opportunity to attend the 5th and 7th ranked school on that list, but decided on the 21st ranked school instead because that was the best for what I wanted to specialize in. Of course, overall the 5th and 7th ranked schools are better, but I don't care how good the chemical engineering department is or even how good the structural engineering faculty is. Those don't impact me in any way.

And only the grad school rankings came out. The undergrad rankings haven't been published yet.

I have got admits from 1) university of central florida 2) san jose state university 3) university of nebraska lincoln. 4) NJIT. i have applied for masters in Industrial Engineering. Can you guys pls suggest me as which Universities are good according to department rankings and other facilities. thanx guys
