Kitty,
Did you read my review of Champlain? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visits/champlain-college-vermont/4291688.html?search_text=Champlain&search_field[]=1&sort_by=date&nsbc=1&is_enabled=1 We had a much different experience during our tour. The guide as well as the admissions person were very forthcoming about all of our questions and Son was able to sit in on a class in the major he was interested in. Sorry your visit go as well.

kathiep, if we had had a tour guide and admissions rep. like you had, my son may have applied. Hence the importance of the admissions people that deal with prospective students. My son left there feeling like they didn’t really care about him, couldn’t be bothered answering his questions, plus he still didn’t know anything more about their CS dept.! That was unfortunate because Burlington seemed like a great college town. Son’s cousin goes to UVM.

We toured Champlain as well. Our tour guide answered the questions we had, and if she did not know the answer she could have gotten our questions answered. Also, when we walked around without the tour guide, someone who works there introduced themselves to us and asked if she could answer questions or help to show us anything we might be interested in seeing. She was most helpful. I agree the views are gorgeous. In the end my son did not apply because he did not feel that it would be a good fit. I found those that we came across to be helpful and very nice people. Kitty, it is too bad that you did not have the same experience.

^^^ Just our rotten luck I guess, nem. Oh well, they say everything happens for a reason. It would have been a 5 hour drive one way for us.

Kitty, it just shows how these visits are just one snapshot of a school. We happened to visit in early November, and normally it would have been quite cold (for me anyway). Well, it was a warm, sunny, beautiful day (probably set a record for their high temps in November). Our tour guide wore a t-shirt, and I left my light jacket in our car (which means that it was warm). I think my son would have gotten the wrong idea about weather in VT if he were to rely on that one visit. I really enjoyed this campus. I guess visits are just lucky or unlucky sometimes, and can leave one with positive or negative false impressions.

Very true. Unfortunately, it was too far away to make a second visit and son was already turned off. The schools he chose to apply to we visited more than once - at least 3-4 times each as I recall since they were within a 2 hour drive.

I have a 3.4ish (I realize that’s above this thread) but I hope I’m still welcome. The other thread is for 3.6-3.8ish and I’m sort of on the low spectrum there and too high for this one. I don’t have a thread. :(

Anyway, with that kind of GPA and a decent ACT (31), what schools would offer good financial aid (we’re poor… very. 16,000/yr ish)? :(

CIA - you are probably a better fit for the B+ thread, especially with your test score. Is that a weighted or unweighted GPA? I would check out the web sites like C****** Board that let you put in your stats and then give you reach, safety and match schools. If your GPA is weighted, I would enter a lower test score to get more reasonable match schools. I think you will have lots of good schools to explore. Again, I would ask this question on the B+ thread.

With an income of $16,000, you should receive FA at most schools.

fendrock - I was just looking over the old posts and noticed that for some of the public schools you put (OOS). Are these schools that are looking to increase their out of state enrollment?

Kitty, Champlain is about 7 hours from us - about the same distance as Roanoke, the college my son ended up attending! Distance (imho) is not as much a factor as how easy it is to get back. Champlain is accessible by planes and trains. Roanoke is a straight shot on two major highways that are not through major city’s. Not easily do-able to go both ways in one day but not a bad drive. With child #3, we may look for closer private schools, but with the very good financial aid at Roanoke, I’m not sure if we can get as good a deal so close to home.

Something else that was on the priority list for both kids was geographic diversity. Not so much for my son when he was looking but once he enrolled he realized how enjoyable it was to get to know kids from many different states. He’s sharing a house with a guy from New England and another one from Tennessee. My daughters friends are more spread out and she can pretty much go all over the world and visit friends from College.

warriorboy, I believe I put OOS next to Trinity University and Chapman – my impression is that these schools are very popular for instate students, and virtually unknown in New England (where we are). Thus I suspect out-of-state students (at least for the further flung out-of-states) will have something of an edge in acceptance.

I also put OOS next to Univ of South Carolina and College of Charleston, as these schools seem very open to accepting out of state students. Even with full OOS tuition, College of Charleston is very reasonable price-wise. University of South Carolina offers attractive scholarships to OOS students, but these are most likely not in the cards for the students we are discussing here.

The school my son is attending does not have a huge amount of geographic diversity (mostly PA, NJ, NY) but one of his best friends (with whom he is sharing a suite this year and house next year) is from Arizona. Makes for interesting discussions! He spent fall break with us and S has a standing invitation to visit him in AZ, which is cool.

re Trinity U: They do love the OOS student and both my CA girls were admitted. But merit wasn’t there for my 3.7 D w/ an 1170. However for her sister with a 3.9 and a 1250 they were most generous.

historymom, I assume that they are not counting the writing section since you are only giving math and verbal scores.

hi sophomore here. i currently have a 2.9 GPA nearing the end of my school year. i havent tried until this current MP and i have straight As. I realized college is right around teh corner and kicked it into gear.
My dream is to go to one of these big universities( I DO NOT WANT LACS!!!):
safetys:
rutgers
arizona

Matches?:
Maryland-Main-favorite
UDEL
Miami-favorite
UIUC
Penn State-Main-favorite
Tulane-favorite
Uconn
BU
Northeastern
Syracuse-favorite
CU Boulder
IU:B
GWU

reach?
Michigan

Hyper reaches:
any UC
USC

I would likely apply EA to the favorites, possibly ED to maryland or Miami
Im from NJ and i hope to raise my GPA to about 3.2 by the end of my junior year.
My SATs will be very good. I got a 210 on PSAT.

MY GPA is low due to A D+ and A C- Year grades for Physics and Algebra 2 respectively. If I were to retake Algebra 2 (D+) would the grade i get retaking it replace the D+?

northeastmom. They didn’t use the writing section for admissions this year so yes you are right, I didn’t include that.

Your safety of Rutgers seems a bit reaching. Unless Newark or Camden campuses (which are great!) Specific program you are interested in?

Are you taking any AP’s? EC I am assuming?

Your list of schools is impressive, I hope some more answer you.

Yeah, I’ve been putting together the list for a while. Rutgers is my instate flagship school. My school is a top 10 ranked compettitve HS in NJ, so usually if you have a 2.7 in my school your good to go for rutgers.

This year I take Honors American lit. I am taking Honors Modern Fiction and Honors Business Management next year, and looking to get into Honors History and possibly an AP psych or AP gov as an elective. I am going to take a few APs as a senior, hopefully i can get into AP english.

APs are difficult to take in my school. Only a few are offered and you have to meet a very high and usually strict pre-req or a teacher rec. to get in.

Rutgers isn’t a safety and the following are not matches:
Maryland
Miami
UIUC
Penn State-Main
Tulane
Uconn
BU

eromano333, BU, Northeastern and even UConn are big reaches at a 2.9. Not to be harsh, but my D has a 3.5 (weighted) and her GC is telling her that Northeastern is a reach and UConn is a match. And BU is at least as tough as Northeastern.
