New 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread

A very good friends daughter loved St. Joe’s. She got a degree in Business finance and a job right after graduation with a large company in center city Philadelphia. College is what you make of it - if it’s too easy something is wrong, and maybe not with the college.

That makes her and the NutriSystem guy and that’s about it. Total diploma mill.

I know nothing about Centre, Transylvania or Bellarmine. I am sure your son would be a geographically diverse candidate there. Whether he would fit in socially might be a key question–TN/KY (I have been to both) are not at all like like CT–not better or worse, but very different.
Diontechristmas, I assume that someone with a screenname saluting a backyard basketball rival of St Joe, Temple, might have some strong feelings about them, but to call a long-established Jesuit institution a “joke” and “diploma mill” seems over the top to me. My mom went to and taught at Temple, I went to another St Joe rival (Penn) and a friend teaches at St Joe (she’s a Princeton grad unlikely to tolerate a “mill”), so I have no bias in this and praise for all 3 schools. Everyone I have met from St Joe liked it–and did not think it was a party school.

My brother in law and his wife went to St Joe’s. She’s an attorney, and he’s doing well in industrial (chemical) sales. They both really liked it.

I guess we were feeding a ■■■■■. They pop up once in a while on this board. ; )

Well it’s not close to a party school, but I never said it was or was not…

yabeyabe2 - We were not originally going to visit the KY/TN schools that were suggested but my son does want to see if there is a difference in culture. He checked out all of their websites and he even watched the dvd’s I had ordered.

The funny thing is that he hated the college visits in the beginning, but now he seems to be enjoying the experience. It probably helps that he has found some schools that he likes.

Hi kids! I think it is worth a trip to HWS, great town, beautiful Seneca Lake! We are staying at the Lakefront Ramada, got a lake view room. Attending the Open House today! Have a personal touch to visit, a childhood friend keeps boat here, went out yesterday so saw the HWS boathouse for crew, also their boathouse for sailboats & a boat they used for environmental stuff docked at the marina-impressive! S likes the town of Geneva very much. So hopefully he will like what they say today, then back on the Thruway!

I am watching the rain over the Lake as I am writing this & joggers are running by on the path/sidewalk which goes around part of the Lake.

It really is a gorgeous part of the State up there. Have fun, SLUMOM!

Anyone know anything about St John Fisher college in Rochester? D received a fairly interesting mailing from them last week…

A few people from my high school go there every year, and they seem to like it. One of my friends is actually in the pre-med program there (with automatic acceptance to med school).

From what I gather its a pretty small school so everyone knows most everyone else.

I would do a visit if you could manage it, rochesters a pretty nice place (though not really close to anything else).

St. John Fischer - nice school…apply early if you are involved in community service there is a nice scholarship opportunity.

Sacred Heart University in Fairfield Connecticut is an excellent, mid sized school, great business school, excellent nursing, top notch athletic training and physical therapy programs - nice campus, great dorms and growing reputation for selectivity. Also, excellent merit $$$ scholarships and Honors College for qualified 3.3-3.5 27-29 ACT students; and even higher $$$ scholarships for 3.7 with 30 and up in Honors College). Terrific alumni connections too.

A relative attends St. John Fisher and has really enjoyed it. She is a local student. Entering her senior year in their nursing program and has worked part time at local hospital.
Came back from a short term (@ 4 wks) study abroad in Italy earlier this summer and had a wonderful experience - working on her language skills.
She is fairly religious and likes the Catholic atmosphere at her school.

SLUMOM - Glad to hear that you are enjoying your trip. I can’t wait to hear about your experience. I’m curious if Hobart has a unique way of weighting grades.

I was comforted by your statement that many kids with low B averages get into Syracuse. That’s one of my son’s two first choices (the other being Ithaca) because he wants to study communications. You’re right, one might have to go into another major, and then see about transferring into Newhouse, if that’s even possible.

So you think it’s worth a try? He’s a kid who was born to two drug addicted parents, mom died of AIDS, went into foster care, eventually adopted by me, then birth dad died of AIDS, 8 sibs, none of which ever went to college. Meanwhile, he did have several Honors classes and one AP class, has an average around 85, but low SAT scores. He’s going to take them again. He’s an African American male and I’m wondering if that will help him if colleges are looking for diversity. And if anyone deserves a break, it’s him, as he’s managed to be a good kid, plays in orchestra, Varsity baseball, no drugs, etc.
I guess I’m looking for encouragement. Thanks.

Manifestation, your son’s story is so moving I cannot imagine Syracuse and Ithaca not wanting to give him a chance

Slumom, Hobart, like Alfred and Wells, gets a lot of positive commentary. I wish one of them were in a lower snow zone, as my son tends to wear shorts all winter!

Warriorboy, it has been great hearing your son quickly turn into an enthusiastic school visitor and sensing that you are becoming more optimistic he will find good fits which are not longshots.

I have been wondering about the chances of any two of the kids so often mentioned on this board winding up at the same school–I am rooting harder for your kids to win the admissions lottery than many of the arrogant kids in my town whose parents I have known for years!

Manifestation, your son certainly has a great story to tell. I don’t think there’s any way for any of us to predict his chances, but I hope (and I think) things will work out well for him.

On the road - NJ to NY. Leaving Wed night and returning sometime Saturday.
Thursday - Alfred & RIT
Friday - Hobart & William Smith
Sat - St. Lawrence

She is looking forward to visiting HWS, from what I have read on here and what my daughter has read on their site it looks like a good fit. I guess we’ll see. Any tips or suggestions?

manifestation - How good of a baseball player is your son? My friend’s daughter had a 900 on her SAT, and a 3.1 GPA (no honors/AP’s) and was a decent runner (not an all star). She contacted the coaches at the schools she was applying to and several of them were interested in having her attend. She received a decent amount of aid at all the schools also.

I don’t know anything about Syracuse or Ithaca but I believe that it does help to be a URM.
