New 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread

Thanks all for this thread. It’s a real eye-opener. I’m new to CC. My son is a Senior with 3.21 GPA, 32ACT, 803/1400 class rank, 2 APs (will have 5 at graduation). He’s interested in studying Computer Science. He won’t qualify for financial aid, so any college with merit aid will go a long way. I might have missed it, but are there any recommended colleges in TX or neighbouring states that my son might get into?.

TxMom…that ACT score will go a long way for your son, I think. Do you need a school near or in Texas only?

TXMom, we are also in Texas and my son has the same ACT and similar stats. He would be auto-admit for Texas A&M. Would he consider that? He would also qualify for Golden Oaks scholarship at LSU (free tuition/no fees). You can google that for more info.

S was admitted to his safety school yesterday, Indiana University at Bloomington!

I do not recall any TX discussions in this thread, but could be mistaken. If you have not already checked, the threads on where did your 3.0-3.3 child get in; where did your 3.3-3.6 child get in and the B+ students thread might be helpful.

This thread was a great addition to CC, the only downside being that its explosive growth and national scope gives you 93 pages (and growing) to sort through!

Yeah for Ready to Roll’s son. It is nice to have one of those early rolling schools done and under the belt.

Congrats RTR! A fine school!

Hooray for RTR’s son!

ReadyToRoll - that is awesome news! Doesn’t it feel like a huge weight has been lifted off your shoulders? And even though your S might not tell you so, I’ll bet he feels the same!

Actually, S doesn’t know yet. I was just checking on line out of curiosity to see if they were showing his file as being complete. And there it was…“Congratulations!”.

Of course, I had to tell my 3.0 to 3.3 CC compadres…I couldn’t keep it to myself!

I don’t think that my S is one to check on-line once the app. is submitted, so he probably won’t know until the packet comes in the mail. I don’t want to tell him because it’s such an exciting moment and I don’t think he should hear it from me. So what will happen is either he will hear that someone else got in and decide to check the website, or he will find out when the packet comes (the website says it will arrive in two to four weeks).

Let’s all see if RTR can wait to tell her son; trust me, it’s not all that easy…hopefully, he’ll find out soon that someone else has heard…two to four weeks can feel like a lifetime (coming from someone who has been through this before)…

Right…when I found S2’s big envelope in the mailbox, I was so excited. He was at home but had a friend over watching TV. I ran straight upstairs with the mail and then yelled down for S2 to come up. I didn’t want him to open it in front of the friend and have to try to act all cool.
Oh course he said 'whadaya want?".
So I yelled louder and he came up. The look of joy on his face was priceless. He even hugged me. There was no way I could wait for the friend to leave. That letter had to be opened immediately!

Congrats to your S RTR and good luck with the waiting!

RTR - I just went through the exact same thing. After about a week the college sent out some financial aid forms (thick envelope) and the next day the housing info. Finally I could not stand it and told my son he should check the website to see “if they perhaps had sent an envelope that got lost in the mail” He was happy, but it just wasn’t the same so I wished I had waited for the official envelope. (I think he thought I already knew the answer - which I did)

Congrats to RTR and her S !!! You are very good! I have been known to steam open acceptance letters & seal them back up again & leave on the child’s bed. Especially if you couldn’t read it while holding it up to the sunlight in the window!

I think we all can relate to RTR! The hidden fear that our B student will not be accepted anywhere. So happy for you and your S (when he hears the news).

SLUMOM - I think I will be steaming open some of the letters as they arrive. Glad to hear I am not the only one.

My son’s school has not handed out (nor mailed) the official transcripts. Therefore, we will not be hearing from any schools for awhile.

Congrats to your S, ReadytoRoll. My older daughter is a freshman at IU this year and loves it so far. I don’t love that she’s 2,000 miles from home, but as long as she’s happy I’m dealing with it. We’ll see if younger S follows in her footsteps…

My S just got home from football and is eating dinner. This is killing me. They also e-mailed the acceptance to him, but to the special account he set up just for college apps and doesn’t check regularly. All he would have to do is sign onto that e-mail acount…right in the title of the e-mail it says “Congratulations from Indiana University!”.

I can’t believe he hasn’t even checked that.

Amazing. And annoying.

This is hilarious, RTR. And wonderful.

Told you this would kill you…think you’ll make it to 11:00 tonight? Why don’t you just casually ask him “when was the last time you checked your college email address?” “just wondering”…hehehe

RTR - keep us posted - this is too exciting. Your S should only know we are all waiting for his reaction.
