New $45.00 fee on USC account

Does anyone know what the $45. fee is which recently came up on USC e-pay?

I don't have a $45 fee. If you click on "transactions" it will tell you how ended up at your final balance.

I don't see a $45 fee listed either.
I am however wondering why the $150 orientation fee is listed as a debit, included in the amount payable before the 22nd. I thought we all paid that in advance (if I remember correctly), similar to the $300 committment fee which does show as a credit.

We got an e-mail from Financial Services this morning saying that everyone had an orientation charge, for ALL students, for costs incurred, separate from actually attending the orientation. I think that's sort of nickel-and-diming, but I guess we'll need to get used to it.

The $300 commitment did not show in my D's account either. I e-mailed financial aid and within 48 hours they responded and posted it as a credit.

Also for Nat Merit ($500/semester or $1000/year), they told me that this scholarship amount does not post until September. However, they marked $500 as "deferred charges" in my D's account, so we did not have to pay for it.

Sequoia, I was confused about the orientation fee as well. Then I realized that what we paid for the orientation session in the summer (for parents and D) is actually separate from the $150. The $150 is to cover their activities during this week (Welcome week).

Oh, thanks Tuitionsaver and Kathyc.
I guess that explains it then. I didn't expect that charge (unless I missed notification of it earlier in the literature, or forgot). Haven't received the email yet.

Thanks for posting this, neither did my D's $400 housing deposit. It is easy to loose track of these "small" numbers in the midst of the $20k stuff.

Sorry, didn't notice any $45 fee for my kids' accounts--we have a spring admit sophomore transfer student & rising junior at USC.

The housing deposit (as I recall) doesn't show up either but you get it back when your child no longer is with the USC Housing System (in our case, after our son opted to go with a competing housing outift after 2 years at USC). They will deduct any damage or losses out of the $400 deposit as well.

Also, remember if your kid is covered under your insurance, you can opt out of their student insurance & save yourself about $1000+ for the year. You have to fill out forms & get a letter from your insurer, but every savings helps. I am still waiting for our insurer to write the proper letter for this year (we were waived for his 1st 2 years of college & still have the same insurance).

EVERYONE has to pay the Student Health Center Fee, it is not waivable, but entitles our kids to get treatment at the health center (good for band-aids and simple medical care).

Groovy..well thanks for posting also. I just checked. Housing deposit $400 is also not listed and credited.
Also the $30 application fee, shouldn't that be listed also?

Didn't see HImom's post till after I posted.
Thanks for that info regarding the $400.

$30 is a processing fee, which covers the costs of processing the application. It should not show up as credit.

The $45. charge is a fee associated with the USC card. Did anyone get that? I wonder if this is for small fees such as using the laundry machines where you need to use your USC card. Please look at your bills and see if you see a $45. fee which very recently came up.

I'd check with your studnet to see whether they've charged something on their USC account. My S used to use his USC account for laundry & food, which can show up as a charge on the bill. I just double-checked my S's bill & he doesn't have any $45 charge with the USC card. On his July statement, he has NO USC Card charges, tho I recall he has had some in the past when (like I explained above).

Haven't checked my D's account yet but don't think she has much on it at this point. She doesn't have a USC account yet, but we may try to get her a card when we visit for Parents' weekend.

i thought that you can't use your usc card to charge anything, that you have to load it with money first before you can charge, am I mistaken?

Did he order the El Rodeo yearbook? They have that option when they do their "Post-Orientation Homework" and it costs $45. USC El Rodeo

I'll ask my son. My son is the type who always wants the yearbook. Do you think that accounts for the $45. charge on the USC card? Wouldn't it be a separate charge? No one else here seems to have the same $45. charge. My husband wants me to call USC, but my experience with calling USC is that it takes a while to get the right person on the phone. I thought we should just wait until the next USC visit and find out in person.

As far as I know, here is the deal will USC card charges on the big bills. Individual charges from the USC card's discretionary account will not show up on the bill- however, if you charge the card's discretionary account, it will show up on the bill. Student are able to do that without a parent's involvement on the USC Card web page. They simply can choose to add money and charge to the account. On that specific web page it is possible to see the various charges made to the USC account, along with where they were specifically made. That should hopefully help you find out what is going on.

We got the $45 charge on the USC Card - five times! 3 debits and 2 credits over a period of days, with the net result being a $45 fee. I'm assuming it would be the yearbook, but I don't know how to tell for sure. mdcissp - please let us know if you find out directly from USC.

You may wish to try sending them an e-mail, since their office is unable to be reached right now due to the huge influx of fall semester beginning. That way you don't have to be on hold forever and you will ultimately get SOME response. Ask your child if s/he ordered a yearbook & how much it was. My kid never ordered a yearbook & we never got a $45 charge that I can remember when he started USC.

FauxNom--Sounds like you got the similar $45. charge. I am waiting to hear from my son if it is for the yearbook. Did you ask your child if s/he bought the year book or made some charge to put on the $45. fee? Unless my son said he bought the year book (and I don't know if this is how it is billed), I thought we should wait a couple of months in case of more charges on the USC bill.
