Any advice that you guys want to give us noobs about the Penn application process?

Your odds of getting in are much, much better if you apply early.

Penn is quite open about this.

It wants as many freshman as ppossible for whom the school was the first choice, even if the applications may have been "strategic" - ie, submitted with an eye to getting into an Ivy ... ANY Ivy.

If Penn is your first choice, don't even THINK about applying RD. Appy binding ED, and take your chances with financial aid.

I agree with the above. It worked for me.

Be prepared for more competition. Apps will definitely rise with the introduction of the common app. and new financial aid policy. Set yourself out from the crowd. Focus on the small details such as the layout/structure of your activity list.

Don't spend too much energy trying to increase your standardized scores. A score that is in their range is good enough. Spend more energy on the essays and conveying your ECs on your application.

good posts! keep them coming...

yeah, penn definitely openly states that they LOVE students who LOVE their school (ie ones who apply early)

Show the admission officers that you are really interested in the school (eg. visiting ..... arranging interview... etc..)

What is the SAT score range one has to reach. Fortunately I don't need to worry about financial aid.

Do you think they would prefer if you didn't use a common app or do you think it doesn't really matter?

Try to show WHY you're involved in all of your activities rather than just listing them... example I was Student Government president & loved math and history, but instead of just listening a lot of random interests, I showed how they all link together, forming my interest in business... how history shows the economic trends and how math explains the trends and how leadership is imperative to success in any arena... just bring everything you do together and show them that you have an aim and a reason for being so involved and didn't simply get involved to get into an Ivy... that will set you apart from everyone else who is involved in tons of activities but can't explain why! Tons of kids can join different clubs and be leaders of different groups, but not all of them will show how this is preparing them for their future or what it has to do with their intrests.

Oh and if you visited the school, mention something about the campus in your Why Penn essay to show you know more about the school than what's on the website or in the books! And don't try to get too weird or unique on your essays, just be yourself and show them something truly human.... it doesn't have to have a ton of big vocabulary words to be good! I'll stop rambling now!

Corporate finance:

I'd say for Wharton the average lower boundary is between 2050-2100.

fjm_001:

I would use Penn's app, it demonstrates that you are more interested there and aren't applying only because they accept the common app.

I'm currently a sophomore. My goal is Wharton. Since last year, i've been doing Student Government (running for Prez next wed!!!) & The Regional Quiz Bowl (most likely captain of Varsity team next year).

However, after I found out how much I loved business, I joined DECA only this year (i qualified for states, but coudln't go b/c costs), and plan on also joining FBLA next year. Do you think that's hurt me that I didn't do these clubs since 9th grade?

I also do some less important stuff, which i started mostly for fun, like Book Club & Animation Club (should I even mention in app?). And also Foreign Language Honor Society. My main QUESTION is how do I show correlation between Student Government, Quiz Bowl, DECA, and FBLA? Especially Quiz Bowl? Any advice?

Do you think that's hurt me that I didn't do these clubs since 9th grade?
No.

should I even mention in app?
If you(notice you and not other people) think it isn't important, then don't mention them.

QUESTION is how do I show correlation between Student Government, Quiz Bowl, DECA, and FBLA? Especially Quiz Bowl? Any advice?
No one but you can answer that XD

My main extracurricular activity: human rights activism. Will Wharton think of me as too idealistic? Not tough enough for the reality of business/finance? If so, how can I eliminate this impression?

Mindy, have you ever held a part-time/full-time job and/or are you involved in business clubs like FBLA and DECA that would show an inclination towards business/finance??? Also, what do you see as the link between human rights activism and international business/finance that would make Penn an obvious first choice for you???...

These are some questions that you will need to consider as you sort out your career goals but it appears to me that you would be interested in something like organizaing an international charity group or founding a non-profit organization.:)

I have organized several conferences/major charity events, so yes, I think that my management/PR skills can be demonstrated through my HR activism.

And Nishant.. I'm beginning to think that you follow me around on this forum. ;D

Oh right, and I want Wharton because it has the top undergrad economics program in the nation. I'm considering a career in international economic development, not necessarily advocacy.

I'm afraid I'm not quite aware of what you're talking about.;) Anyway, you seem qualified/interested in Penn so the answers to your originial questions would be NO and NO.

IS this a good summer plan?

-Operation Enterprise (3 college credit program by the American Management Association atr UCLA)

-High School Investor Challenge (year long investing program offered by TCU)

Wharton teaches business..it just calls it economic science or something like that. If you really want pure econ. you should look into the college (which is very highly ranked for econ) or schools such as Uchicago or MIT (sloan)... Personally I want to get a degree from wharton and an econ degree from the college, regardless of the time it takes me. I'm just too in love with Penn and with econ. to choose any other school . ( Its gonna be such a hard blow when I get rejected hahaha...thats me for optimism hehe).
