AZ Resident Non-Resident
National Achievement, Merit, Hispanic Awards $11,000 $17,000
President’s Award $9,000 $13,000 - 15,000
Provost’s Award $7,500 $10,000 - 12,000
Dean’s Award $2,750 $8,000 - 10,000
University Award N/A $4,000 - $6,000

Are these amounts new because I’ve never noticed them? I’m pretty sure all these bumped up scholarships for OOS applicants so it’s good new for everyone! Makes Arizona State even more appealing than I thought, but I just wish I knew the amount that I stood at with my stats.

Are those the new amounts? I know that they added these “New American Scholarships”, but they’re listed differently on the website…It just says residential/non-residential.

What I want to know is if the national merit/achievement/hispanic scholarships have gone down…Before they were $15,000 in state and $23,000 for out of state, and that’s a pretty significant drop…Lame

Plus now they’re going to have to compete with U of A, who still offers $15, 000 in-state.

I did not see that they drop the National Scholar Scholarships amount for NMF, NAF, and NHS. I believe they make those scholarship varies base on the stat of the student, not just their National Merit/Achievement/Hispanic status.

Yeah, I contacted my representative. They are definitely decreasing the national scholars scholarships this year
And all scholars get the same amount, no matter what type, or how good of a student…It’s a blanket amount.

So, guys, can someone tell me the total scholarship offer for OOS National Merit Finalists entering with the freshman class of 2010? I’m confused here. Thanks.

We are very disappointed that ASU is lowering their National Merit Scholarship. The instate semifinalist amount has dropped from $9,000/yr to 0. The finalist has dropped from $15,000 to $11,000. This sends a message that the univerisity is shifting its focus on attracting top students. As more finalists choose schools with ‘better offers’ there will inevitably be a decline in these students which will lower the overall quality and appeal of the school. Big mistake and disappointment.

When I talked to President Crow last summer he said they were not going to touch the national merit scholar award (I don’t know about semifinalist). Where are you getting your info? I’d be interested (and sad) to see this. Did they do it to both OOS and IS?

It’s weird that they changed these amounts. It almost seems like they’re trying to attract out of state top students, but I’d say ASU already has a solid amount of OOS students.

mmmcdowe, it’s on the ASU website, and I talked to my ASU college rep and she confirmed the changes. It affected both in state and out of state merit scholarships :(. I don’t understand why they are pandering to out of state students, when it’s ARIZONA State. No offense, but shouldn’t the priority be on recruitment scholarships for students living within our own state?

Out of state students often end up staying in the state of Arizona or eventually move back, thus bringing the academic excellence that got them the scholarship to benefit AZ.

I am very sad to see the scholarship drop. It did a lot of good for ASU’s reputation and academics.

We had been told repeatedly that the amount would likely stay the same or increase. I am also questioning the choice to release this information right after the December 1st deadline for many schools. Will the overall quality of the school be impacted as many talented students look elsewhere? U of AZ is looking like a way better deal at the moment…

^ I completely agree tquenn. I went up in October and was promised this amount, with no hint that it might be changing. As such, I was pretty content, and I only applied to one other school. Now I’m pretty much out of luck, and my options are extremely limited. I feel EXTREMELY deceived…they should have been upfront. Changes like this don’t randomly happen over night.

U of A offered me 15 grand and I didn’t even apply. I’m definitely going to have to keep their offer in mind now.

Not yet. We were told last week that they would start sending letters last week. The first letters will go to the students who applied the earliest. Now that they won’t give a penny for semifinalist, we are anxiously waiting to hear something…

I applied in August, got accepted in September, and still haven’t heard anything. I’m also a Barrett Honors Student and a National Hispanic Scholar with pretty good stats…enough to merit a scholarship. Should I be worried?
