Hey everyone I'm new to the board and I am getting kinda antsy waiting for a letter. I just wanted to hear thoughts on what you think my chances are at Cornell's Hotel School.
I am from Plano, Texas
I am ranked 126 out of 938 in an EXTREMELY competitive HS.
3.9 Weighted GPA
1970 on SAT II's
Worked a part-time retail job for the past two years.
Had brain surgery during my junior year.
Diagnosed with epilepsy during junior year.
NHS and Participated in Theatre Program for over 6 years.
Applied early to Stanford and was rejected. Applied to Cornell, NYU, GWU, USC, and UNLV.
Does that make me "interesting" enough? LOL any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

im guessing plastic surgery goes without speaking, right?

What's that supposed to mean? :(

yeah i don't really get it either.

plano, i think you have a decent chance considering your story. 1970 is a little too low for cornell although i do know someone with a low 2000 who was offered a guaranteed transfer after one semester...she also went to a very competitive high school in ny. it would be important to mention your situation junior year but also how you were involved in activities that relate to the school you are applying.

wait, i just read you got a 1970 on the SAT IIs. what is that supposed to mean? what was your SAT REASONING score? and SAT IIs would probably be important too.

Sorry SAT I's were 1970 SAT II Lit was 590 Math 1 was 630. Low I know... I wrote my essay on overcoming challenges and my hotel essay on the similarities between the hospitality industry and the medical profession. I would eventually like to become an anesthesiologist and I explained the correlations.

i think u should retake/take some sat iis incase youre deferred. now that i see those scores...your chance has decreased.

how can you get deferred for regular decision? So, why didn't you apply to the arts and science school, or agriculture school, or engineering school, if you wanted to be an anesthesiologist?...i'm dont know if it's a bad thing, im just wondering...

(woot...400th post)

You can get your undergrad in anything you want as long as you get your pre-reqs for med-school. I am interested in hospitality management and medicine so I decided to pursue both.
As for the impact of those scores I try to focus on my positives, I mean not everyone has a 2400 when applying to cornell. I managed to stay in the top 15% despite being hospitalized 4 times in the past year and a half and having a seizure in the middle of class. That's got to be worth something...

the hotel school is lower in gpa/sat they look for your passion to commit to the hotel industry..

jim said it right. not everyone has a 2400, yes plano, but those who get scores on the lower side of applicants tend to offer something great about themselves-whether it be athletic/ethnic/or hold a true passion for the respective school to which they are applying. you don't seem to have any of that going on for you. and you will most likely get waitlisted (what i meant to say in the previous post), if not rejected.

This is obviously not enough info to make a decision on whether you’re “interesting” or not! it seems like you’ve had some tough times…scores aside, it’s wise to show your interest in the school you apply to….

I have been in theatre for 6 years, and I am planning to work in the Disney Internship program this summer. I mentioned this to my interviewer.

that's really cool! definitely worth mentioning! GL

awesome. however when my interview comes up next year when i ED im gonna mention my passion to the hotel industry and my goal to go to cornell to major in hotel management since I was in 6th grade. i plan to of course achieve this goal. and my intern at ritz-carlton this summer :D

Congratulations on your internship at the Ritz! What will you be doing there, and how did you get the internship? Jobs at hotels for high school students seem hard to come by!

That is so true! Everyplace wants you to have experience but no one is willing to give you any! How did you get that internship?

i don't think its very difficult to get a non-paying job at a hotel. especially if youre from ny...you can basically have your pick.

Thats true...I didn't think in terms of a non-paid internship. Is that what most of the people applying to the Hotel School do? When you have such an internship, what do you actually do (responsibilities)?

I told them I'm a student I speak fluently English and alittle Korean and my intern is at Seoul, South Korea. I told them about my passion, that I want to go to Cornell and I would like to learn about the Hotel Industry before I go to college. The people I guess didn't mind it because I can also speak alittle Spanish so it helps and it's nice to have a person who speaks english fluently since its the summer also. I hope I have a job at the front desk, I don't want housekeeping, or any hard labor job lol.
