I’d like to study Computer Science with a track of software engineering or software programming.
My SAT is 1300 in my junior year and haven’t taken my senior year SAT yet but should be better than that.
My current ugpa is 3.6 in junior year and should remain about the same for senior year.
I have no extra curriculars because of a crippling debilitation.
I know that NB is a huge campus and traveling between classes might be an issue for me but if it’s worth going to NB then I’d make a way.
I know the Newark area as I live 30 minutes away and have visited a few times. I realize it’s an unsafe place but if I have to stay locked up in my dorm for 4 years, I’d do the prison time if the degree were worth it.
I know nothing of Camden except that I found out today it has the lowest class profile grades of the three. According to 2016 it appears that the sat range is 1060-1260 and the ugpa is 3-3.6. This nearly made me cross it off my list.
If all prices were equal, which campus would you recommend. Please consider only the best potential for a good high paying job. Also consider safety of the campus. I’m an easy target. Also, would you suggest I attend Newark and commute for 2 years and then transfer to NB for their rigor and degree, or would I be losing out on some Financial-Aid due to the transfer?
Rutgers NB has the best reputation, but lately Newark has become pretty popular too. NB is a very spread out campus, so there could be a lot of bus commuting. I feel like NB could have the best chance at a high paying job though. I also don’t know if Camden is the safest because of it’s major city location.
Rutgers New Brunswick is the biggest of the 3, around 36,000 undergrad, and has the biggest alumni support, extracurricular activities, D1/B10 sports, reputation, etc.
Rutgers Newark is a good school, around 8,000 undergrad(12,000 total), D3, a bit more commuter heavy/suitcase, but like flyingsquirrels said its growing.
Rutgers Camden is small, around 5,000 undergrad, a bit commuter heavy/suitcase and is lower academically/reputation than the other 2
Since you’re closest to Newark and are applying I’d say drop Rutgers Camden off the list
New Brunswick/Piscataway has a more college town feel while providing a small city, whereas Newark is in a larger, more urban city that is closer to NYC.
Both have safety incidents(you should definitely have street smarts/be careful), travel in groups if possible, don’t be flashy, don’t walk out alone/linger at night, etc. You should be fine as long as you don’t do anything stupid.
RU New Brunswick has a lot of college students in the area, College Ave is in the heart of New Brunswick(downtown), & RU Newark is surrounded by other colleges nearby(NJIT, Essex County, etc.) & is walking distance to Downtown Newark.
For Newark police constantly patrol the area & there’s 24-hr security at each dorm. I’ve been at RU-N for a year and a half now and I have never had any crime/safety issues. I don’t feel like I’m in a prison, & I usually walk(light rail or bus for longer trips/night). Newark has buses/Shuttles, but they aren’t necessary to get around since the campus is small and easy to navigate.
If that SAT score is on the 1600 scale than you should get into New Brunswick. You’ll get into Newark as well, you might be able to bet into the Honors College &/or HLLC(free room+board) at Newark if you apply. You can commute to Newark than transfer to New Brunswick if you want to save money/experience both campuses
If you’re commuting I’d say Newark but if you want to dorm/want a college town I’d say New Brunswick. It sounds like New Brunswick/Piscataway might be a better fit for you if don’t like urban environments.
For New Brunswick you could choose a Campus such as Cook/Douglass if you want a smaller, less urban feel. Busch is also a more suburban feel & a lot of the STEM stuff is there.
I heard that the academic requirements for computer science is more difficult so I figure that a 1300 is not enough to get in. What do you think of the transfer loss idea. If I transfer from Newark to NB will I lose out on financial aid? From what I understand, transfer students get way less financial aid.
