New BU President

Hey, that’s an interesting way to start off our freshman year of college.

I wonder what this will mean–I heard some kind of talk about them electing a new prez, but wasn’t for sure on it.

I wonder if they’ll be a lot of changes.

Bob Brown was the provost of MIT and remains a scientist with a lot to his name. Looks great to me. It isn't a surprise-- they've been looking for quite a while.

I'm excited about him, based on his bio. I like that he's currently an insider in the world of Boston higher ed, but was not born in to it; his degrees are from public universities away from the East Coast, which makes me happy.

Yeah, it's funny because a couple friends of mine are going into Chem Engineering at UT as well.

Heard the old president didn't get along too well with the admin.

"Heard the old president didn't get along too well with the admin."

HA!

You will hear many stories about Johnny Silbur and his would-be successor.

John Silbur has been around forever. He's an unbelievably controversial figure, but he did a lot of good. He's also the man behind our lack of cable TV up until last year, the strict guest policy and the lack of a football team.

The guy they hired to succeed him looked very promising to everyone. Then, the week before he took office, he started talking about all kinds of "new ideas" he had (which I guess he had kept from everyone up until that point). The admin freaked out and changed their mind about him. Because the contract was already signed, they had to pay him a couple million. BU gets made fun of for that episode all the time.

As for the new guy--we'll see. As much of a pain Silbur was, I would like to see a president who's willing to do somehwat controversial things if it will improve the school's reputation.

what does the new pres. want to change, anyone know?
