New Buildings for USC

In his recent address to the faculty President Nikias announced new buildings for SC:

New student health center-

Faculty Club to be moved to restructured and restored Stoops Building-

Annenberg Complex funded by recent donation by Wallis Annenberg and Annenberg Foundation-

New gym and cafe to be located on Soto Street opening in 2012-

Construction site preparation has begun for the John McKay building-

Any word on when they’re finally going to tear down The Lot and replace it with something useful?

Hallelujah for the new Health Center. It’s about time it got bigger and better facilities.

I was on campus this week for Explore USC, and I saw construction happening across from the practice football field. What are they building there?

They need to redo the architecture building because ironically enough, it’s the ugliest one out of all of them!

USC plans to make more improvements on buildings. Priorities have to be set. The university just completed a multimillion dollar student center and more dining choices. Also, there were renovations in dorms and more secure and new practice rooms for music students from Thornton. The USC Institute for Creative Technolgies was dedicated at Playa Vista.

Before new buildings can be constructed funding must be in place. Donors need to be found who are in a position to give the large amounts of money needed.

VHFather…

The new construction you saw across from the football practice field is the new Athletic Building:

[New Athletic Building Planned - USC News](http://uscnews.usc.edu/university/new_athletic_building_to_be_built_on_campus.html)

Thanks for the help AGTrojan - another question for the group. When I was there last weekend with my son, we saw the Lyons Center and pool area. From what we saw, those areas didn’t seem that great. Are these facilities better than they appeared to us?

Did you go inside? What specifically did you see?

The Soto Street gym/cafe is gonna be in HSC so undergrads wont really see that
The health center is something coming thats not really talked about (mainly the mckay center thats underway, and the future Annenberg building)

Until now, the talk was mainly about the student center and film school, but they’re done, so ppl tend to move on and look for new bigger and better things to come in the future.

The plans for the master plan north campus are amazing. Don’t know how many years that will take…the only ppl here now who will use it r probably faculty (or maybe freshman who stay for they’re masters…and maybe phd) check it out here: http://re.usc.edu/docs/University%20Park%20Development%20Project.pdf

Other than that, USC is going out of their way to make the campus look even nicer (which when they say that means more red brick and limestone) so…for example, there’s one building behind the student center that really looks ugly (white paint, old windows, just this short two story rectangular side of a building that was just sitting there). Well now that building has been renovated…which means they stuck bricks on the side, and put a limestone cap on the roof…and voila…one more classic east coast looking building with no real effort.

The things our school does to make itself seem so amazing from the outside =]

**side note. check out the side of the campus center (if u peer behind the bookstore) since that part of the cc is hard to see, theres no bricks at all, just a peach colored cement facade. The bricks, as usual, only for looks! it does look great tho

Aren’t there earthquake safety regulations that regulate the use of brick in buildings? Perhaps a student in architecture could explain when and how bricks are allowed.

VHFather, I’ve only been inside the Lyon Center a few times (there’s a gym in the dorm next to mine, and I am ironically quite lazy when it comes to working out), but the room I was in was quite nice. I think it is nicer on the inside than on the outside. There are a bunch of different machines, most of which I didn’t know how to work, so I stayed away from them!

Thanks wisdom - that’s what I was wondering.

"Aren’t there earthquake safety regulations that regulate the use of brick in buildings? Perhaps a student in architecture could explain when and how bricks are allowed. "

Haha! The bricks in USC buildings are just an aesthetic facade :)

Oh, I love out of staters worrying about earthquakes.

I’m still bitter about PIC (the music industry offices/practice rooms) being torn down for the athletic building. I spent all 4 years of college in PIC to let off steam. I hear having the practice rooms in that horrible Campus Gateway apartment building hasn’t been working out well…

I just became a music student this semester (musical theatre minor), but other than having to hike all the way to Gateway from my dorm, it’s not too bad. The facilities are quite nice. Though my Yogurtland budget has gone up considerably… :)
