are there any good cell phone deals (like tmobile) at the beginning of the school year? i don't know whether i should get a phone now or once school starts

also what is the best way to get a smartphone without a forced internet plan (since neu has internet all over campus)?

Keep in mind that, ‘internet all over campus’ only applies OUTSIDE of dorms. Seriously. International Village is the only dorm with wifi. You can bring a router to other dorms (or use a roommates or neighbors if they let you have the password) but that can be unreliable.

Get a prepaid Android phone and get a Skype number. Use the campus wifi or get a router for your dorm. The Skype number can be setup to mimick your cell number so people won’t know the difference if you call them on Skype via wifi or directly through your T-Mobile or ATT account. You can also get unlimited calling very cheap with Skype. Really, there is no need to get locked into any expensive post-paid plans. I spend about $100 per year for cell service by using Wifi most of the time.

thanks for the advice! as for the prepaid phone, it would require wifi for texting as well right?..since prepaid phones charge a lot for texting

T-mobile has a new 4G no contract plan that might work for you.

$30 per month
Unlimited Web & Text with 100 Minutes Talk
Great for video chat, streaming
music/movies/TV, playing
online games, and more.

If you opted for the Student Advantage card they offered, there are some good deals through that for phones.

Thanks! I found out you could save 12% for tmobile with sa

Virgin Mobile has the $30 per month for iPhone (300 minutes and unlimited data/text)
