New College of Florida vs. Burnett Honors College at UCF

Pros and Cons of each please!

I'm having such a hard time trying to decide between these two!

I love New College's learning for learning sake's policy, but I fear the lack of a gpa will hold me back when applying to grad school

UCF is close to home, but I don't know too much about Burnett...how good of an education will I get there? Will I get into a good grad school by going to Burnett?

Since grad school is your goal, New College’s narrative evaluation will help you more than a GPA ever could. Think of it as a Letter of Recommendation, only with a deeper insight on you, your thoughts, and your possibilities.

Grad schools, especially those that focus on research, would see NCF’s evaluation as a true testament to your independent intellectual capabilities and interpersonal relationship skills.

UCF’s Burnett Honors College, on the other hand, is a GPA-based institution that provides smaller student-faculty ratio for Gen. Ed classes, somewhat interesting seminars, and exclusivity solely because of the title.

NCF is liberal arts based, and is a top ‘feeder’ school for graduate studies. Success is dependent on various factors, but if you’re shooting for Rhodes or Fulbright, NCF is your best bet.

Allow me to defend BHC.

With UCF having over 56k students now, BHC is an incredible resource. It only has approximately 2k students, and so they give their students great amounts of personal attention and help with whatever they need–in addition to perks like free, unlimited printing and early class registration (which is a Godsend that prevents you from becoming the posterchild for “U Can’t Finish”).

The Honors classes themselves offer little benefit, but it’s BHC as a whole that provides the benefits. I’m only a freshman, and I’ve already talked to the Honors advisors regarding internships, study abroad, prestigious scholarships like the Truman, and grad school, and they go above and beyond to help their students on a one-on-one basis. Without their help, I’d be clueless, but now I’m incredibly prepared.

Furthermore, BHC gives you a foot in the door when it comes to the rest of the large, metropolitan research university. I intend on doing undergrad research, and BHC gives you an advantage when it comes to getting to know professors and applying for such things.

BHC’s students are highly successful. We’ve had winners for every prestigious you can name, had our students become Florida Gubernatorial Fellows, and get accepted into many first-tier grad schools. I was personally wary of going to UCF over other schools because I was worried such a “no-name” school would hurt my prospects when applying to law school, but I was wrong.

Finally, not having an actual GPA for grad schools to look at does hurt you to a degree. BHC more than makes up for NCF’s narrative evaluation.
