Do you have to reapply for the Gates Millenium each year?

I’m not the parent of a Gates Scholar, but you only compete for the scholarship once. Once you’re named a Gates Scholar it is a designation that lasts. Each year you do submit the financial paperwork to the program. Basically, it is a four-year scholarship, or longer if you go on to graduate school in certain disciplines.

I still have no idea if I can/will go… I confirmed my interest in attending but made it clear that I was requesting a travel grant.

Had I booked a flight a few weeks ago it would have been notably cheaper. But I’m still indecisive. I’m not sure what to do. Should I pay up, buy the ticket, and hope I get a grant to cover some (less than half) of the cost? Or… do I wait? Even when I receive the response to my request I’m not sure how that will affect my decision. Getting the grant would help, being rejected would hurt, but neither condition makes the decision any clearer.

I’m just terribly indecisive I suppose and the cost is incredibly disconcerting.

what im doing is just waiting if i get the travel grant and if i dont im not going but going to request that those who did go post what was went over. of course, im assuming someone will be generous enough to post what was discussed in the conference.

because i really don’t want to go and waste money on travel and stay only to find that they tell us how to apply to fafsa…

Just wanted to say that if you get a chance and can find the way to go,by all means go. My S and I went to Yale last year and he visited Williams via QB. We stayed in Millford which was 7 to 8 miles away in a Howard Johnsons for under $200 for 2 nights. Can’t remember which site either Travelocity or Priceline. He is going to UofChicago this fall,it was his second school in his matches. He had MIT first but they are highly selective which eveyone knows. Anyway he is very happy about Chicago. Good luck everyone, hope you can make it to anything you are offered. They make it possible for people that put the hard work and time in to achieve the goals that you and your family thought might be impossible or not affordable.

hmm… i didn’t get the travel grant for the conference at Stanford… how am i goin to go?

it’s great that I was invited but i cant afford to fly myself and my mother all the way to Stanford… that’s more than 800 miles away!

Dear woohoo2011,

I 'm really sorry you didn’t get the travel grant. That’s really a bummer.

Maybe you could go on your own without your mother. Do you know anyone who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area? If it’s an adult, perhaps he/she could accompany you…

has anyone heard about the summer programs at Harvard, etc.? when are we supposed to be notified?

Shouldn’t winners have been notified already? I think they will know by now.

yeah, im pretty sure winners have been notified around last week. i know this because apparently i was one of the finalist, but i got an email around last friday saying that i ultimately was not chosen for the summer program scholarship…

im from south florida and im going alone to yale and i cant rent my own hotel room? is anyone here going with their parents and maybe they could just sign saying its ok that i stay in a room?

who knows what to wear for tomorrow’s Stanford conference?
What’s the dress code?

“We recommend that you wear nice clothes, as you will be meeting college admissions officers. However, formal attire such as suits and ties is not necessary.”

I had a great time at the Stanford conference yesterday!

Questbridge is amazing; I can’t wait to start my Match application in a couple of months.

^may be I met you yesterday!

Questbridge is great, but we still need to work extremely hard in order to “maximize the good luck”.

Indeed. That speaker was great. Awesome way to end the day.

yep! the conference was great… but im nervous about the match lol
hard core!

I’m going to the one at Yale…I’m so excited :D

i did the Quest NCM and jeezus it was intense… but worth it in the end
good luck to all those applying!! :)

and, i cant speak for any partner college other than Bowdoin, but i got my final FA package yesterday and the only amount not covered by grants is $1800 that i will come up with using the work-study program… so i would say that that’s a pretty sweet deal :)

If any of you have looked recently, I just noticed that two “new partners” seem to be Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia! I’m very excited to see Questbridge expanding its options :)
