Does anyone know anything about the UA New College? It appears that you can somewhat create your degree plan. Is it compatible with Honors College - can you be enrolled in both? My daughter is interested in digital graphics, but she’s finding that most schools either offer heavy programming with no art, or all art with no programming. She would love to be able to blend a computer science with a digital design degree.

I have not heard about the New College program. If your daughter is a very strong student, take a look at the CBHP which is part of the Honors College.

When my son and I visited Dean Halli (March 2008), Dean Halli shared examples when students proposed class offerings that were not available at the time. The Honors College took the requests seriously and accomidated the Honor’s students requests. The CBHP does not fall into that example however, at the beginning of their second year, CBHP students take a lead roll in research and incorporating the use of computers into THEIR field of study.

*DS is in his second year of the CBHP. He never even considered UA or the CBHP until December of his senior year. He LOVES UA and is very greatful Dean Halli urged him to apply to the CBHP. DS is working side by side staff and faculty in his field of study.

Best to your daughter. (I’ve returned to college (AGAIN) studying Graphic Design after raising 3 boys. If you have specific questions, feel free to send me a private message.

Yes! You can belong to both the Honors College and New College!

And, yes, you do get to design your own major (with approval). If you go to the website, it gives you some ideas of how some kids have taken what they’ve needed from 2 or 3 majors to create their own major depending on their interests. This is especially helpful for students in various pre-professional programs (pre-law, pre-med, etc), who don’t want to just major in biology or chemistry as pre-med, or political science or philosophy as pre-law.

I also want to second the suggestion about CBHP… my DS1 is in his 3rd year of CBHP and loves it (and loves Dr. Sharpe who is the director of the program and current interim dean to the Honors College now that Dr. Halli retired.)
