New Computer Engineering Major

i was wondering if any one had details on the new major…all i know is that it is suposed to compete with the eecs major at berkley

Hi! So EECS at cal is a little misleading. You pick a concentration in EE or CS so technically your degree is either in electrical engineering or computer science but not both. In eecs students have the opportunity to take classes in both though. At Ucla the difference is we have discrete majors for each specialty but students take classes across both departments. Computer engineering is part of the ECE Dep which houses electrical engineering. The computer science department has computer science and computer science and engineering. The only difference across the four majors is how much of a blend of CS and hardware you get. So on a spectrum it’s this.

EE, Comp E, CSE, CS.
CS is purely software while EE does take 3/5 of the lower div CS courses for our major. Hope this helps. In summary whether at cal or at Ucla you can get to find a degree that fits how much hardware or software you want.

CSE (which has been around forever) and the new CE major are virtually the same major. I think they differ by like 3 classes.
