New dorms coming

<p>As part of the new budget UW got approval to add a 500 bed dorm and new cafeteria in the Lakeshore dorms area. Should have room for all freshman now.</p>

<p>In any case, I just <em>REALLY</em> hope the design is a LOT better than the hideous new Ogg and Smith halls, both of which are literally hideous.</p>

<p>No, it was just included in the new budget that passed yesterday. It was taken out of the last budget. I don’t find either of the new dorms that bad at all. You are not going to get Yale or Princeton style dorms at UW.</p>

<p>There is a lot of good stuff on that list. I’m particularly happy about the faculty retention fund, which hopefully will have a greater impact during a recession. Tandem getting a new spot is awesome too.</p>

<p>Haven’t seen the new Ogg and Smith, but poor design can certainly cost as much as good design. Hopefully some thoughful people are involved in the new dorm.</p>

<p>I don’t think Smith and the new Ogg are hideous. I think they’re just a big waste of space. The rooms are really quite big, and when there’s a housing shortage, there shouldn’t be a focus on building dorms with huge rooms and walk-in closets. They’re nice dorms, I just think they could have been built to house more students.</p>

<p>I’m glad there’s another new dorm though. I wonder where they’ll put it within the lakeshore area.</p>

<p>I think it goes on a current large parking lot. I think the larger better appointed dorms are a direct result of competition from other schools that have upgraded dorm standards. Many kids today do not accept a shared bath for 20 rooms and a small room for two people. Most kids who can go to UW had their own bedrooms all their lives.</p>
