New dorms on outskirts... are they safe?

When I went on a tour of the campus, it was mentioned that new dorms were built in what was generally accepted to be a "ghetto" area. Who gets placed in these dorms, and are there concerns for safety?

I assume you’re talking about the Riverview Apartments that are across the Genesee River from the main campus.

Currently only upperclassmen (seniors and some juniors) live in the Riverview Apts.
All freshmen live either in Sue B. (downhill) or on the Quad (uphill)–all in the middle of campus.

Safety really hasn’t been a major issue at the Riverview. If you’re still concerned about it when you’re a senior, then don’t live there.

Yes, that name sounds familiar. So where do sophomores and juniors tend to dorm? And from reading your response I assume you get to select housing in junior/senior year? Thanks very much for the response; I really appreciate it.

Sophomores and juniors tend to live in the Quad in some of the upper class dorms (I forget what they’re called) or in Phase behind Sue B.

There is a lottery for housing. Seniors are drawn first, juniors next and sophomores last. You get to choose your housing from the available options left in order of the draw.

Upperclass quad dorms-- Burton, Lovejoy, Tiernan.

Sophomores and juniors also have the option of living in a fraternity, sorority or one of the special interest houses.

And, like Chedva said, you get to select your dorm on an as-is-available basis through a campus wide lottery–a system that’s quite common on most college campuses.

Because the Riverview is brand new and has amenities not available in any of the other dorms (full kitchen, dedicated parking, air conditioning)–it’s very popular.

Just wait until you live in freshman housing for a year…you will be drooling for Riverview! They’re freakin’ hotels - a nice size single, your own bathroom, a big kitchen with new appliances (they have DISHWASHERS so I don’t have to wash stuff by hand any longer :), and a nice living room.

These are very popular.

You will not be able to get them. They are only for upperclassmen.
