It doesn't really matter. There are preppy people and there are laidback people. At Duke there are all kinds of people.

Personally, I'm a jeans, T-shirt, and sweatshirt kinda person. I occasionally dress up in a sweater with a collared shirt underneath but that's very rarely. My roommate on the other hand, tends to be rather formal. Sweaters, polos, button down shirts, slacks, loafers, etc. When I go out, I see all kinds of outfits, from gym shorts and a t-shirt, to sweatpants and tank tops, to corduroys and polos, etc etc. It's really whatever you feel comfortable in.

Yeah...people really honestly where whatever they want!

In terms of girls, there are definitely tons of people who wear sweatpants and flipflops/Uggs to class 95% of the time, but then there are people like me who like to get more dressed up (not heels or anything, but skinny jeans, flats, a nice blouse, dresses, etc). There are preppy girls too. Basically everything.

In terms of going out and things like that, it just depends on the occasion. If everyones going to, say, Shooters, you'll quickly learn that you don't get dressed up to go there...really. Freshman do and just, don't wear anything you value. BUT other places/going out to eat/some university events its definitely fun to put on a nice dress and heels, and alot of girls would definitely agree with me!

I haven't heard the best things from T-Mobile on campus. If you are able to switch services, I strongly recommend Verizon for Duke's campus.

Laundry system is pretty easy. Each dorm has a number of washers/dryers, and you'll pay via FLEX (you'll find out more about what that means in the spring, but you're basically using your Duke expense account to pay for laundry). I believe there is a laundry service around, but I really don't know anything about them.

The laundry service is called Devil Laundry and it's a student run business I believe. My friend had it last year.

They give you a canvas sack which you fill with dirty clothes every week. You leave it outside your room in the hallway on sunday and they hire people (students) to go around to all the dorms and pick it up. Then they launder it, fold it, and shrink wrap it and put them back into the sack which is then returned to you and left outside your door on tuesday, IIRC. I don't know how much exactly the service costs, but it's in the neighborhood of maybe $200 a semester? Someone who has had it before could probably tell you more about that

Haha thanks madboy. I think we've talked before. Good to know you're still roaming these boards w/ quick replies. I hope you're liking Duke. But my question remains semi-serious...

Thanks LoveDuke22! My D has been accepted as a student athlete, but we were told they mix the athletes in with the other freshman and discourage them from rooming with teammates in the same sport. This is one of the reasons why we so strongly supported her attending Duke - the strong focus on the non-athletic side. She will graduate with a great education.
