I know this question has been brought up in the past, but my situation is different from previous posters.

I have been accepted both to NEC and BOCO but for different programs. NEC for master of choral conducting and BOCO for master of music ed. My career goal for the foreseeable future is secondary choral music (but you never know where you'll end up teaching). NEC offered me more scholarship money than BOCO, but I'm not sure if choral conducting is going to give me the complete music ed education I will need. They have a music in education concentration where I could take some classes in addition to my conducting. BOCO's downfall is that the program starts this Summer, and it would be difficult for me to find housing from July-August and lose the deposit on my current apartment. Any thoughts?

Welcome to CC. While I can’t help you choose between those two programs, I have added your acceptances to the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1045522-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2011-a-60.html

From the details, I am going to assume that voice is your primary instrument. Please let me know if I should change that. If you have any other acceptances, of if you choose to divulge the amounts of your scholarships, we would be glad to include that as well.

Do you already have a music ed degree? Have you already fulfilled your student teaching and all the other requirements for certification? If so, that NEC degree sounds very attractive.

I have my bachelor if music education including student teaching. I do not have certification in MA yet but I understand both schools can help with that.

I’d have a look at the required courses. My H, who has an undergrad Mus Ed degree from WCC, ended up going for a Master’s in Music Ed. But, he says after his undergrad experience, he could have taught the classes that he took for his masters. In fact, more than one of his professors told him as much! He’d tell you to go for the conducting degree from NEC. It may open more doors for you than the other.

As far as housing is concerned. PM me. I will have an empty apartment a block away from Boco during the summer.

I have decided to attend NEC in the fall for my master of choral conducting. Obviously I am very excited.

Congratulations … great school, great location! Best of luck to you.
