New England safety and match LACs that have good aid?

Hello everyone,

I’m trying to add some safety and match liberal arts colleges in the (preferably) New England region that have good aid to my list. I am interested in history, politics, law, philosophy, really anything in the humanities. I have a 1290 SAT score and a 3.75 UW GPA. Decent to good ECs but not leadership heavy. I’m looking at schools that meet around 90% of aid and above. Does a low match to safety school like that exist?

I am very interested in Saint Anselm, it’s a New England LAC that shows as a safety school for me, but as of right now I don’t think it it’s doable as the net price calculator came in a little too high. St. Michael’s is still kind of high but it’s the closest I have found. I have U of Maine Orono on my safety list, but I’d like to add one Liberal Arts College.

If anyone has any advice for me or knows of a school it would be much appreciated. Have a good Labor Day, and thank you

See how Wheaton (MA), which would make an excellent choice for your academic interests, appears for you financially.

For a school that meets most of your criteria, research Drew, which resides just outside of your preferred geographical area.

What’s your actual budget?

Schools that meet need generally require high stats and have really low admission rates. You should pick your financial safeties first. Are there any schools you can commute to from home? Or any that offer enough guaranteed merit to make them affordable?

Western New England?

Juniata College and Allegheny College (in PA,) are generous with merit scholarships.

Salve Regina University in Newport, RI is very generous with merit aid. URI is as well.

Thank you for the suggestions. I was really surprised by Wheaton’s net price calculator. However, I noticed they were a female only school until 1988. What is the environment like for men there? I also noticed many describe them as a more liberal school, which doesn’t exactly align perfectly with my views. I understand that most schools in the region lean that way, but is it in your face all the time like it is at some schools? I am also going to do some more research into Drew, I really like how the campus looks.

I don’t have an exact one yet, as I am still discussing it with my parents, but I know that 35-40k a year is not going to be doable. Would like to stay at or under 30k mark before loans, work, and everything else.

That’s what I mostly figured. I have some state schools that are doable, and I have the option of community college and transferring to a state school. I’m just trying to find maybe one liberal arts college that I have a good chance of getting into that is affordable and in the northeast/New England region.

I would be okay with western New England schools. I like the outdoors.

Thank you for the suggestions, will look into those.

Salve Regina came in a little too high on their net price calculator. Will look into URI today.

We didn’t think Wheaton came across as super liberal when we visited. I think they’re a good option for you. Here are some additional ones to research:

Hobart & Wm Smith
Marist
Merrimack
Muhlenberg
St. Michael’s
Stonehill
Susquehanna
Ursinus
Washington & Jefferson

Does Franklen&Marshall give merit aid?

No, they are need-based aid only.
