Son (rising senior), about a 3.0, 25 on ACT's. No AP classes but school system is pretty good. We live in Northern Virginia. He very much wants to play hockey (goalie) at some level (plays AA travel) in college, wants to study sports management, wants to be in New England (family up there, hockey) at a large "spirit" school. Would appreciate any/all insights on:
UMass (Amherst)...club hockey but not sure his GPA will get him in
Endicott...too small?
University of Southern Maine...is it good?
University of Southern New Hampshire?
Salem State?
UMass Lowell?
University of New Hampshire...not sure he can get in, too much partying??

Any other suggestions for schools based on his profile? Thanks to all!

UNH’s club team is really good. They even get discounted equipment from nike bauer (off of warehouse, not retail). My brother goes there (the business school), and he never took any AP’s, had a ~3.1 gpa, and a 29 act (I think). He’s doing a lot better there than high school, and has gotten involved in reffing for intramurals (including hockey). He’s also not really a partying type, but seems to really like it there anyway.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. McPucks, it sounds like it might be worth it for him to apply to UNH. I’ll also suggest he look at Buffalo, Babson, Keene. Hope we can find a good fit academically and athletically.

Clark? Don’t know about athletics there but it is a great school academically for kids who want to learn but weren’t top A students in high school. Read about it in “Colleges that Change Lives.” Gordon College in Wenham (religious affiliations-?).

The UMass system if fine, and at UMass Amherst, not everyone parties. A lot of kids we know go to UMass Lowell and do athletics there. UMass Boston is a great school but no dorms.

SNHU, Keene and UMass Lowell would all probably be good fits.
He can also look at St Anselm’s, Stonehill, Becker College and Merrimack.
I think UNH may be a reach.
There is also Western New England College in Springfield.

If he likes hockey he is in the right area geographically. All the schools have hockey and all school are wild about hockey.
If he wants the D-I hockey experience he should consider - UMaine Orono, UMass Lowell, Merrimack as well as UNH and UMass. They are all in Hockey East.

I lived in Portland for a while. It’s really a terrific place for someone who doesn’t mind the winters, but I thought of USM as a commuter school, which appears to be borne out by US News (about 20% live in university affiliated housing).

UMass is no longer Zoo Mass; the label is from the 1970’s.

UNH is bigtime hockey, in Hockey East with BU & BC - the last two NCAA champions - so it may be too high a level. UMass is also in Hockey East, along with Northeastern, Vermont, Maine, Providence and Merrimack College and UMass-Lowell.

Nope, UMass is still known as Zoo Mass, by every kid I know. That doesn’t mean that everyone parties, but it still has the reputation, at least in Mass.

What about UVM? Not sure what stats he’d need to get in.
