<p>lkf725, you do not need extensive background in all three but the more you have the better. The way it works is you have to take a 'fundamentals' course in each of the three areas and then you can choose the rest of your electives from whatever area you want. (Since I am Mechanical I would take Mechanical electives if I go there.) Therefore, you need to have at least some basic programming experience, linear algebra, probability, etc. that will be useful for the classes, but you do not need to be in expert in every field.</p>
