New Fin Aid Package - Help

I just got a letter from the University I chose and they decided to take away seven thousand dollars worth of grants. I am freaking out right now, because the new amount I would have to pay is beyond what my parents can afford. The letter said that my verification of fin aid did not match my fafsa. I don't see how this would have happened, since it was identical. I applied to this school early decision, I knew my aid in December, but they suddenly changed it. My dad is telling me that he will send me to Community College if things don't change. I turned down a full tuition scholarship from my state school in order to attend this university.

How can I explain to them my current situation and ask for my old aid package back. I already pulled out of all the colleges I applied to. If they were going to send me this new package they should have done it sooner.

call them on monday and ask them what didn’t match. It could be a mistake on their part.

Check your FAFSA to see if they have they adjusted your FAFSA to reflect what they see as differences between your tax return and what you put on FAFSA.

i always wondered about early decisions and its implications…for example this very case.
student can’t afford school anymore, most likely a private school…He can opt to join a community public school but not a public state?

explain anyone?

To the OP…you say you “knew your aid in December” but truthfully, your financial aid award would NOT have been finalized until your family’s income taxes were filed and the corrected financial aid forms (FAFSA/Profile) were filed with your school. There is NO WAY your taxes were completed for 2008 by December. When did your family complete your taxes and when was your FAFSA amended to reflect that you had filed and that the info on your FAFSA matched the tax return?

In any event…schools DO make mistakes…so do call them first thing on Monday. In the meantime, you can check your SAR on the FAFSA website to see if it differs in any way from the one you think they used. Check it LINE BY LINE to see if there is a difference anywhere on the forms.

Didn’t you post a month ago that you had a full tuition scholarship from SU and something from Pepperdine and were choosing betwen them? And that you sent FAFSA verification info to collegeboard? Now you’re complaining that an ED school lowered your aid but you had a fourth acceptance at an instate public and implying you withdrew your other apps? It’s getting hard to follow these random threads with conflicting info and try to give you a straight answer. Please try to post as accurately as possible, while protecting your privacy, if you truly need help.

I’m guessing that your recently submitted verification form was actually an IDOC - not for FAFSA, but for Profile. FAFSA and Profile are not the same and some of these schools use both. All financial aid awards are subject to verifications and the schools reserve the right to adjust aid awards. Anyway, based on your verified and corrected Profile info, the ED school realized that your IM EFC was higher than their policies allow for one or more grants. This happened because the Profile was filled out incorrectly or your financial situation changed. Or they made an error, then or now. Or they actually were trying to verify FAFSA figures and you sent the info to college board instead of the school…impossible to tell from the info provided.

You need to call the FA office, be calm and polite, and ask them specifically what has changed. You and your parents should evaluate their response and see if it’s accurate or needs further clarification/corrections. Meanwhile, see if your public school still has space available and if there is a chance they would consider reinstating your acceptance and award, or if they will do so on a deferred basis. Did you ever notify them that you were not going to accept their offer?

What I don’t understand is if you applied and were accepted early decision how any other schools came into play. We couldn’t let our daughter apply early decision anywhere because we needed to be able to compare financial aid packages.

Pea, my thoughts exactly!

How could you have been accepted at ALL of these schools if you were accepted ED to any one of them? If you were accepted ED, you were required to pull all of your other applications.

Agreed…your story isn’t making any sense.

There is no “University of Pepperdine.” There is Pepperdine University. Lot’s of (more significant things) don’t make sense here.
