new future student

hi all, i’m currently studying finance in italy, in bocconi. Next year (on september) i’ll complete my second year of master there, in yale. How is life there? Is there someone who can speak with me a little bit? thanks in advance

Will you be taking classes at SOM? If so, I would recommend to take advantage of any shopping period fully. I say this because you probably have a pretty technical background in finance, whereas some of the SOM students know nothing coming in, and certain classes are tailored for them (as an undergrad who had only interned in finance, I found that some classes were way below even my knowledge level). I would highly recommend trying to take electives in the college if that is permitted. From a skill set point of view, the introductory writing classes in Yale College are rigorous and may serve you well for years to come.

In terms of general things, make sure to check out the food carts at the ice rink - it’s close to SOM and there are so many delicious (and cheap) options. I’m not sure what the weather is like in Bocconi, but spring at Yale is extremely cold (by my books). If you find that your shoes and coat aren’t appropriate, I would recommend dropping by OISS and asking for recommendations of where to go shopping. They generally run shopping trips in the fall but the senior staff at the center are lovely.

Get on mailing lists, and try to go and listen to as many guest speakers across a range of topics. This is one of my regrets - I signed up for the most difficult classes I could, so spent a lot of time studying and barely went to any talks. I would do things very differently if I got to go back.

I’ll follow the second year of phd in economics
