New Grad Student Coming to UT, Offcampus + misc questions

Hey guys,

I just got into UT-Austin for grad school, I'm really psyched about getting in. It's going to take some getting used to the weather (I'm from the Northeast) but I cannot wait to move to Austin.

Anyways, I was hoping you guys could answer some misc. questions I had:

(1) I was wondering what places are good to buy furniture? I know a lot of people say craigslist, but I don't want to buy a used bed. A used desk, a used dresser is fine, but i'd like a new bed.

Please keep in mind, I'm a guy who never complained about dorm furniture. So I'm not looking to live like a king. I'm hoping to spend ~ $1000 on furniture (new bed, used desk, used chair, used dresser, used night stand) and splitting costs on a couch, dining table, misc. home furniture. Is this a good estimate?

(2) I had some questions about the RLM library (Math and Physics). How packed is it? Is it hard to find a seat next to an outlet?

(3) If you live 15-20 minutes away, is it easier to just walk to class than wait for the shuttle? I think I live a few blocks away from the shuttle, but I've heard it can be packed and walking is a guaranteed 15-20.

(4) Any advice for an incoming grad student? I might be TA-ing one of your classes one day!

Wow, congrats…I’ll try and answer your questions if I can:

1.) Try IKEA, they have a Blue Moon sale so you can get a desk or futon. What I reccomend is go to Wal Mart and get an air bed, its just as good as a bed and easy to move around. Also, I have a good students desk that you can build (doesn’t take too long) and you can move it around as well as an air bed so if you want let me know :)

2.) IDK bout’ this one

3.) Get a bike if you can but 15-20 minutes walking will depend on how far you live, walking from a place thats 20 minutes far might be hard day in and day out, not to mention you might show up to class dripping with sweat…lol.

4.) What class are you TA-ing and…PLZ HELP ME!

Good Luck man and once again congrats!
