At the beginning of this year, my school instituted a new grading system. Before, any level of A was worth 4 points but now a 90-93% is 3.7 and from 94-100% is a 4.0. The reason for this grade system is to help out the failures who get 0% in a class. With the new grading system, a 0% automatically gets boosted to a 55%, helping the failures pass but screwing over the people who actually try for their grades. My 4.0 is ruined, even though I'm still getting straight A's, so I was wondering how much this would affect my chance of getting accepted into the schools I applied to. Should I explain the new grading system and send a copy of the new regulations with each midyear report? Or even send in the most recent report card to show my grades are still all A's and that it's just the school that has changed?

yes, definitely mention the change in grading systems on the midyear report, thats extremely important. Dont worry too much about it, as long as you got good grades, your fine.

Yeah, send in a copy of the new regulations and a report card.

Since there is absolutely nothing that you could have done, and you got screwed, I will be VERY, VERY shocked if they even bat an eye.

I mean, really. That’s just flat-out ridiculous. At my school, if you want to do something like this, you have to start with the INCOMING freshman class…

They can’t change the rules like this. If I were you, I would take this case to the superintendent. Think about it. Does this seem fair?

You’re fine, but still… I would be ****ed off beyond belief.

Is it really retroactive? If you already sent your midyear reports I don’t see why you need to contact your colleges about this. They instituted this policy too late for that.

The retroactively recalculated your GPA? That’s VERY strange since normally they just implement it on the new freshmen rather than go back and recalculate GPA.

And making sure everyone passes? That’s crap. It’s giving a free ride to everyone. I severely dislike the educational system in America sometimes.

OP: before you get your pants in a bunch, make sure the guidance office didn’t put this on the school profile or as an addition to seniors’ transcripts…

If they didn’t, then you can let the pants go…lol…

Since midterm exams were only last week, midterm reports are not ready yet. As such, I have yet to talk with my guidance counselor about sending the midterm reports. I’ll probably be making a visit next week, after I get my report card.

yup…before they are sent to colleges!!! let us know how it goes…it would only take a short letter from guidance to go with the midyear report to make sure colleges are made aware of this change…otherwise, not a big deal…the new grading system is actually what most colleges use themselves as another poster mentioned.

Don’t colleges recalculate your GPA using their own scale anyways? All they see on the transcripts are your letter grades, if I’m not mistaken. To them, a 90% appears no different than a 99%.
