New Graduate School rankings are out...

Michigan stood its ground. There was very little movement ones way or the other.

MBA
Ross stayed roughly the same, moving up a couple of spots from #14 last year to #11 this year. This is not a significant move as very little separates top 15 MBA programs (with the exception of the obvious ones; HBS, Wharton, Stanford and perhaps Booth, Kellogg and Sloan). MBA programs ranked in the #7-#17 range are all roughly the same. The main reason for the slight change is employment rate 3 months after graduation (improved slightly from 81% to 85%) and the reputational average, which inched upwards from 4.1/5.0 last year to 4.2/5.0 this year.

LAW
Michigan Law School again stayed roughly the same, dropping one spot from #9 last year to #10 this year. Again, this is not a significant move, as very little separates Law schools ranked between #4 and #14.

MEDICINE
Michigan Medical School dropped slightly, from #8 last year to #12 this year. There does not seem to be any discernable reason for the shift, but only 3 points (out of 100) separates #8 from #12, so it does not take any significant change to cause movement between those medical programs.

ENGINEERING
Michigan stayed roughly the same, moving up one spot from #9 last year to #8 this year.

The only other new rankings were in the Science fields. Again, there was no real change. Michigan moved up one spot in Biology (from #20 to #19), Chemistry (from #16 to #15) and Earth Sciences (from #9 to #8) and dropped one spot in Mathematics (from #8 to #9). Computer Science and Physics remained the same at #13 and #11 respectively.

Some of the rankings make no sense to me.

I say this as an MPH student who absolutely adores my program: if we’re in the top 5 of MPH programs in the country, I am terrified to see what the state of public health is going to be like in a few years. I had to explain to a fellow MPH student (different program than myself) why you couldn’t take the sqrt of a negative number for an epid problem… several times. Reading the papers of my colleagues is just painful. I don’t know how they made it through undergrad let alone admitted to grad school. The whole MPH program has left kind of a bitter taste in my mouth. My department in particular is incredibly disorganized and just seems like kind of a joke all the way around. Yes, MPH is different than a typical master’s program, but still…

OTOH, my sociology and business grad classes have been spectacular. The M-CUBED project I’ve been involved in has been wonderful. The opportunities here are top notch. The only reason I’d encourage anyone to go into my program here is because we have access to courses from several top-ranked grad schools.

romanigypsyeyes, it is hard to tell whether or not a program should be ranked among the top 5 or not since one needs to compare it to other programs before conforming or denying the validity of the ranking. Is Michigan MPH program really as good as Harvard’s, Columbia’s, Emory’s and UDub’s or should it be ranked lower? Without evaluating other programs, it is hard to tell. One thing is clear; Michigan’s MPH program has been ranked among the top 5 ever since I can remember.

These USNews grad school rankings have really been a snoozer over the last several years. Michigan Engineering and my specific program are about the same as when I entered my PhD program.

It is amazing USNews actually makes money off the grad school rankings book. The rankings never change. I only buy a Usnews grad school rankings book every 5 years. That is actually how often they should be making these special rankings books…I guess consumers aren’t that practical…some people must be willing to buy anything.

Well, the good news is that the grad program I’ll be attending here moved from #2 to #1 in its subcategory and #4 overall. Of course, there are no jobs available, but at least the diploma will look nice hanging in my call center cubicle.

Other UM Grad program rankings.

Nursing #6

Pharmacy #7

Psychology #4

Public Health #4

Library Programs #4

Social Work #1

Statistics #12

Economics #13

Education #8

Alex, I understand. I’m just saying I don’t understand the ranking system based on my experience in a “top 5” program.

It is what it is.

Hey RJ, could you post the Sociology ranking? I can’t find the new rankings (is it subscription-only for the list?)

I got the rankings off of mgoblog.com

They were discussing them there.

Poly Sci #4

Ah thanks. I’ll go check that out. (I’m heavily leaning towards applying for my PhD in Soc there next year, hence the interest lol)

Michigan’s Social Science programs are off the charts. Only Econ is ranked out of the top 5. Anthropology, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology are all ranked between #1 and #4.

Sociology - #1 Princeton; UC-Berkeley; Wisconsin; #4 Stanford; Michigan

Political Science - #1 Harvard; #2 Princeton; Stanford; #4 Michigan; Yale

Psychology - #1 Stanford; #2 UC-Berkeley; UCLA; #4 Harvard; Michigan; Yale

The rankings were done by US News in 2013.

^ Weak… :)

FYI, Michigan’s Ross school just put up a billboard along the 405 freeway for their Executive MBA program in L.A. The billboard is interesting in that it only has the “M” logo with Ross underneath - not entirely obvious.

I guess they’re trying to reach out to all the wealthy Westside, OC and South Bay people who likely lean to U$C for their part-time MBA.

I didn’t realize their anthro program was ranked that high… I’ve been wanting to take grad anthro classes but there are only a handful offered each semester. I haven’t looked into what research they’re doing.

“The billboard is interesting in that it only has the “M” logo with Ross underneath - not entirely obvious.”

To the people they are reaching out to UCB, it is entirely obvious. Even if it weren’t, it would cause someone who was curious into checking out its meaning.

"^ Weak…"

I know, UCB is not in the top 5 for Poly Sci. ;-)

Alexandre, can you please post the “peer reputation rankings” and “recruiter rankings” for the Top 15 Business, Law, and Medical schools? Also, where can I find the graduate ranking for Anthropology programs? Thank you!

I’m sure you’re right. It was obvious to me.
What continues to surprise me is how many people are not curious or inquisitive.
