It is that time of the year again. The USNWR just released its annual graduate school rankings. Michigan improved in some key areas, remaining the same in some areas and dropped in 2 areas. Here's a summary:

BUSINESS (MBA): Michigan improved from #13 to #12. Michigan's ranking will continue to rise as the Economy picks up and as Ross' new building becomes better known by recruiters.

ENGINEERING: Michigan improved from #9 to #8, remaing #1 in Nuclear Engineering, #2 in Industrial Engineering and #5 in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering.

LAW: Michigan remained #9 in Law, but its peer assesment score improved from 4.5 to 4.6.

MEDICINE: This was Michigan's biggest improvement, from #11 to #6. I do not recall ever seeing Michigan ranked better than #7, so this is a major coup.

SCIENCES:
-BIOLOGY: Ironically, Medicine was Michigan's biggest improvement while Biology was its biggest drop, from #15 to #20.

-CHEMISTRY: Michigan remained #16, stilled tied with Princeton

-COMPUTER SCIENCE: Michigan remained #13.

-EARTH SCIENCE: Michigan dropped from #5 to #9

-MATHEMATICS: Michigan improved from #9 to #8

-PHYSICS: Michigan improved from #13 to #11

-STATISTICS: This is a new ranking. Michigan was #12

Overall, Michigan has seen some encouraging improvements. Given its relatively strong financial position, its ability to improve facilities (and purchase new ones such as the Pfizer research HQ) and to hire new faculty, I would expect Michigan's improvement in the rankings to improve in the coming years.
