New Graduate School Rankings by the USNWR are out

It is that time of the year again. The USNWR just released its annual graduate school rankings. Michigan improved in some key areas, remaining the same in some areas and dropped in 2 areas. Here's a summary:

BUSINESS (MBA): Michigan improved from #13 to #12. Michigan's ranking will continue to rise as the Economy picks up and as Ross' new building becomes better known by recruiters.

ENGINEERING: Michigan improved from #9 to #8, remaing #1 in Nuclear Engineering, #2 in Industrial Engineering and #5 in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering.

LAW: Michigan remained #9 in Law, but its peer assesment score improved from 4.5 to 4.6.

MEDICINE: This was Michigan's biggest improvement, from #11 to #6. I do not recall ever seeing Michigan ranked better than #7, so this is a major coup.

SCIENCES:
-BIOLOGY: Ironically, Medicine was Michigan's biggest improvement while Biology was its biggest drop, from #15 to #20.

-CHEMISTRY: Michigan remained #16, stilled tied with Princeton

-COMPUTER SCIENCE: Michigan remained #13.

-EARTH SCIENCE: Michigan dropped from #5 to #9

-MATHEMATICS: Michigan improved from #9 to #8

-PHYSICS: Michigan improved from #13 to #11

-STATISTICS: This is a new ranking. Michigan was #12

Overall, Michigan has seen some encouraging improvements. Given its relatively strong financial position, its ability to improve facilities (and purchase new ones such as the Pfizer research HQ) and to hire new faculty, I would expect Michigan's improvement in the rankings to improve in the coming years.

Alexandre I thought USNWR will not be released until 12:00am Thursday which has about a 2 hour count down on their website.

Anything in social science area besides law?

I have the online version. The magazine will not hit the stands until tomorrow.

The Social Science rankings were not updated this year (they will probably be updated in April 2011), so they remain the same:

ECONOMICS: #12
ENGLISH: #13
HISTORY: #7
POLITICAL SCIENCE: #4
PSYCHOLOGY: #3
SOCIOLOGY: #3

Oh thanks, wow I was really expecting to observe the social science ranking.

Alexandre, you forgot education.

EDUCATION: #14

 • Education policy: #9
 • Educational psychology: #2
 • Higher education administration: #1

I did indeed. No change in Education rank. Michigan still #14 overall and #1 in Higher Education Administration.

Go blue! Woot! Woot!

Michigan really needs to work on improving it’s natural science rankings. You hear anything about that Alexandre?

Also just curious Alexandre, where did USC drop to in engineering now in that USNWR figured out how it cooked it’s NAS faculty numbers?

“MEDICINE: This was Michigan’s biggest improvement, from #11 to #6. I do not recall ever seeing Michigan ranked better than #7, so this is a major coup.”

Wow! That’s a huge jump that should only get better.

Michigan’s Medical school just received a major boost in funding…and the addition of the Pfizer research park will also help. I would not be surprised if our Medical school solidified its position among the top 5 or 6 Medical Schools in the nation on the next 2-3 years.

USC dropped to #10 in Engineering.

Michigan’s weak link has always been Biology and Chemistry, although the Chemistry department is known for being very undergraduate friendly. I have not heard of anything that will improve Michigan’s standing in the rankings. We definitely need to improve our facilities though, if we want to compete with the big boys.

^^I’m surprised with Mary Sue Coleman’s backround that these issues haven’t been addressed.

where does usnews get the “Graduates employed at graduation time” statistics from for MBA rankings? It’s kind of troubling to see 60-70% for the best programs…

self reporting from the university.

It seems to you Michiganders that the credibility of the USNWR rankings is entirely contingent upon whether Michigan is ranked highly or lowly. Hypocrisy, thy name is Wolverine!

I believe all major MBA programs have a standardized system for reporting placement information that they use. Last year was a tough year and MBA’s were not exempt.

iamtbh, I agree with expert (peer assessment scores) rankings, not with amateur (USNWR’s flawed undergraduate formula) rankings. That is why I tend to agree more with graduate rankings, since peer assessment score make up a larger portion of the ranking.

Alexandre, do you know when the undergraduate rankings are released?
