I'm going to be a grad student at SB this fall. I have a couple questions.

1.) are there any affordable apartments CLOSE to SBU? I went to apartments.com, and most of the units I saw were aroun 1400 a month. A little steep for me ATM.

2.) How is the parking ituation for commuters at SBU? I'll be at the school of medicine and the main campus, so I'm wondering what my walk to my car will be like?

3.) How many parking permits does each student get? I dont mind only taking my car, but I have a motorcycle and would love to ride it every now and then.

4.) How are the drivers around that area of Long Island? I've heard horror stories about theroads and drivers throughout LI.

There’s a bulletin board specifically for housing stuff at SBU. I really don’t know where but you can call them up and ask around.

Bad. Yes, Bad. Unless you want to wait for a damn bus to take you to the campus, it will definitely be a walk.

One permit for each car/motorcycle w/e. So you can get one for your car and one for your motorcycle.

If you want to compare it to NYC, then we are “relatively” better, but on the absolute scale, bad. Only on Long Island you will see 2 accidents on the same street at the same time.

There are a ton of postings for places at HSC (health science center aka medical school). They typically have places that are 15-20 min away ranging from 500-900 a month. Those are of course great deals if they are still available.

To answer your question about parking. Since you are working at HSC, then use their garage. Trust me, you won’t be sorry. You are always guaranteed a spot, there is like 24 hrs security, garage never closes, and it’s like $15-20 a month (last time I checked). Price may have risen, but the garage is in the med school. So it’s more or less a matter of you taking a few elevators within the garage and med school. No real long walk, although it depends how far you parked your car away from the elevator.
