According to Gerald O’Hara in Gone With the Wind, “Land is the only thing in the world worth workin’ for, worth fightin’ for, worth dyin’ for, because it’s the only thing that lasts.”

And yet the oldest continuously operating family farm in the United States (founded 1632) is now being sold, representative of a declining connection to the land among most Americans. At the same time, green commerce and industry is thriving, seeming to show that Americans really do still care about the land and environment. In this course, we will look at some of the contradictions at the heart of America’s obsession with land, exploring personal reflections on land, fictional representations of land, and current political issues of land-use and land-ownership.
