New hook at Harvard?

50 Grades of Grey: Harvard becomes latest college to accept BDSM club - U.S. News

Considering that universities admit such that participation in their clubs are maintained, I wonder what impact this will have on admissions.

Stories like this will help parents like me get over their Harvard … umm … fetish. I don’t think mandatory student activity fees should be used to fund such clubs. Since activity fees are part of the total cost of attendance, and since the cost of attendance affects the amount of federal financial aid, the taxpayer is is paying for some of this. I don’t think he should.

They’re really stamp clubs. (Or that’s what they use to masquerade as…)

I suppose DISCUSS ISSUES are the key words here.

As for all paying fees…someone is always going to not want to pay for someone else’s favorite club. I’m fine with it.

A valid point, but on the other hand, I don’t want the taxpayer paying for endless discussions among administrators of where exactly to draw the line on what sorts of clubs should and should not be funded.

I pay student fees to fund a club called “The disciples of Bob Barker” but I have to agree that time spent bickering over who is worthy of funding is a waste of time and someone (student, parent, legislator) is always going to have a disagreement over who is worthy.

What do you mean by “such” clubs?
Do you mean BDSM subject matter clubs?
Or do you mean the general idea that many college student clubs are often trivial, esoteric or non consequential?

These are just a tiny few of the many real existing clubs at a college we visited:

Bass Anglers Club
Free Thinkers
Adventist Christians
Anti Abortion
Argentine Tango Society
Baking Club
Belly Dance Club
My Little Pony Club
Quidditch Club

Do any of those deserve to be paid for by “mandatory student activity fees?”

I was shocked last year when a few friends and I were @ Toad’s Place listening to a live band on the 2nd floor(Lily Pad).

As we exited at the street level at around 11pm, we saw a huge group of scantily clad(in very sheer/very short/birthday suit like lingerie, heels/barely there fashions) Yalies entering Toad’s Place at the main entrance. I was a bit taken aback by this sight and asked the bouncer what the heck was going on… and apparently its a club that meets once a week, on Monday nights and they get together and party…and he said that the party gets very down and dirty…

My friends and I chuckled wondering if their parents knew what they did on Monday nights! Cause they sure weren’t studying!!! The things you learn when you go out for a quick martini and a little music listening!!
