New Instagram Feature: Threads

Just became aware and am doing a little research - for personal/professional.

Anyone signed up, have experience?

This is not a thread for those who are not interested or don’t have social media. That is your choice but I do not want this to be a social media bashing or bragging thread. After all, if you’r reading, you ARE on a message board, a form of social media.

Post your experience, pros/cons, etc. as you learn/experience this new option, Threads which is a text app.

That they didn’t launch in the EU, due to their strict privacy requirements, gives me pause. I don’t use TikTok because I don’t trust the source country.

I signed up but have my account private. It seems to have literally launched overnight. Don’t have a lot of time to explore at the moment but it strikes me as Twitter-ish. Old Twitter.

I use Twitter quite a bit, for reading not posting. The big drawback that I have seen about Threads is that currently there is no way to only see posts from people that you follow and there’s no way to see your timeline in chronological order.

That makes it much more like Facebook‘s system, where you are heavily at the mercy of the algorithm, rather than being able to actually curate what you want to see, and how you want to see it.

It also makes the app less useful as a news source, because it is more likely to give you posts that have been popular over the past 24 or 48 hours, but a news post that was made 20 hours ago and was very popular is not really news now.

Thanks. I’ve been on Twitter a very long time. I use it mostly for sports and entertainment stuff.

I will wait and see how people like it before joining Threads. I like the chronological aspect and following certain sources versus the algorithm method. We shall see.

That’s helpful insight.

30M signups so far, already eclipsing Mastadon and Bluesky. Looks like it’s well on its way to critical mass.

I think it’s stupid.

Makes me think of this…

“Being popular on social media is like sitting at the cool table in the cafeteria of a mental hospital.”. Never twitted, will not thread.

You can actually curate on Facebook now under their new “Feeds”. I have it set to only my friends and pages I follow and most recent. It’s not up to the minute like Twitter, but I won’t use Twitter any more. Never used it very much anyway. I like Reddit now.

I haven’t checked out the Threads yet. Instagram drives me nuts not being able to see the most recent stuff.

Just know that the Meta user agreement basically grants access to all your private data to……Meta

That comes under the heading of…if you aren’t paying for the product, you ARE the product.

Reminder of original post.

Lots of journalism types and celebrities are on Threads now. I’m watching to see if/when government agencies migrate there, particularly the emergency response people. There are features I liked about Twitter that aren’t available on Threads, yet.

It def is more of a competitor to Twitter than Mastedon, Blue Sky, Tribel, etc. Has that critical mass already. In terms of the feed, everyone wants a chronological feed of the folks they choose to follow, but by not doing that yet, it means that everyone has full feeds. That sucks you into using the app. Hopefully the other is in the works.

People who say things like that probably don’t know much about how to curate what you see and who you interact with on the app. But that’s okay. It’s not for everyone, and if you don’t want to learn how to use it, that’s fine!

For now, I don’t plan on migrating. I use Twitter for mostly reading political posts. I never post or retweet. I like that my username is not my real name. I have not read whether Threads allows you to create a username that is separate from your real name.

When I use FB, my feed will include some food or news post. Some people have no problem commenting or liking something (like a CNN or FOX post). It is something I never do because I just don’t feel comfortable with that. I only post and like my actual friends’ posts. Having read about the data scraping from Meta, I probably won’t use it.

You take your Instagram name with you I believe. Mine is not my real name.

I joined yesterday. I hate Twitter (largely due to its owner) and would love to see it disappear. I am happy to have an alternative.

My use for Twitter for was to have a means to get the attention of businesses when there is a problem. If everyone signs up for Threads, I’m happier I using that, despite all the general terribleness of fb, meta, etc…

A friend just posted this “The best feature of Threads is that it’s making Elon Musk very angry.”

I joined because I’m afraid Twitter is going to implode. I use it (twitter) regularly - following political folks, science and medical folks and local news and weather.
One warning I read was that if you want to delete your account you are also deleting your instagram account. Doesn’t matter to me because I’ve never posted a thing on instagram but I understand that some people have large audiences there.
Concerned that there isn’t an option to see only your chosen list. We shall see.
