"New" Interest in Acting and Theatre... too late?

Hey good folks of College Confidential,

The Short Version: Want to do something drama oriented, but due to recent change in interests not qualified...

The Long Version:

I am a senior in high school with a 3.7 GPA, 2100 SAT, and about 720 SAT 2 average (if this information matters).

I was really interested in going to business school so I could make a bunch of money, but now I realize how ridiculous that is due to recent events in my life. I realized that the only reason I wanted to do something in business was for the money and literally nothing else.

I have always been interested in Theatre or Acting, but I decided to devote my time to sports (recently being named captain and winning awards for spirit and service every year) thinking it would help get me into a better college for other majors. This leaves me without any performances under my belt or in my resume.

What would you folks recommend for someone like me? I was thinking maybe trying to get into a decent program that doesn't require and audition (maybe a UC?) for 2-ish years and then transferring into a more prestigious school (I would literally die if I got into NYU), but I figure you folks probably have better ideas/suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Also, I apologize if something like this has popped up before/recently, but I have searched everywhere for an answer with no luck.

Many colleges and universities offer a theater major, so if you aren’t looking for a BFA or for a program that requires an audition you have many, many, options. Your plan can work just fine. Look for a program that has lots of varied performance opportunities during the year, and participate in as many as possible. Don’t forget to take your turn with the tech. work!

There is a sub-forum for theater majors in the College Majors Forum where you might get more ideas. Click on “Discussion Home” in the upper-left of this screen and scroll down to find it.

And don’t forget, if your high school has any winter or spring productions you still have time to get involved in theater there!
