There was some post in the Public Ivy Leagues thread about "New Ivies" but it didn't explain what they were... Could somebody tell me what they are?

The ‘New Ivies’ are the schools which have risen in prominence and are well-known throughout the US for having excellent academics, competitive admissions and top students.

Such lists often include:
Carnegie Mellon
Duke
Johns Hopkins
New York University
Northwestern
Tufts
University of Virginia
WUStL
Wellesley
Williams

Etc.

You can’t really talk about the new ivies without mentioning Pomona!

Here’s a great list from Newsweek: [America’s 25 New Elite ‘Ivies’ - The Daily Beast](http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2006/08/20/25-new-ivies.html)

ha!

good one

there is talk about the top non-ivy schools

yet Stanford, MIT and Caltech, arguably the top non-ivy schools are not even mentioned

good one

NYU and Macalester don’t belong on these lists. They’re not amongst the 8 best non-Ivy private schools. There are probably like 15 LACs better than Macalester.

Stanford, MIT and Caltech are NOT “New” Elite colleges.

^^^^so you don’t think that Stanford, MIT and Caltech fall into the following category that was posted above?

The ‘New Ivies’ are the schools which have risen in prominence and are well-known throughout the US for having excellent academics, competitive admissions and top students.

and further, does Williams fall into the new elite category that you are describing?

because, certainly, Williams has been elite for decades…

It’s pretty universally realized that Stanford, MIT, Caltech, and Chicago are basically equivalent or greater to the Ivy League schools, which is why they’re never mentioned in such lists. Lists usually begin with Duke and Northwestern, which commence the 2nd tier behind the Ivy Plus.
