Ryan graduated from high school, then spent a year in community college.
He said on yesterday’s show that his dad is a huge trivia person so he may have picked up some knowledge from his dad.
His dad(who died when he was 17) was a trivia buff. He watched Jeopardy with his mom, read newspapers with his dad. He wasn’t a great student but was a big reader .
He worked as a para transit driver for SEPTA before getting very ill with Covid in early 2021.
He is married with an 8 year old son. I think he’s an interesting guy and am enjoying his run.
I guessed Trafalgar correctly. The only other possibility was Waterloo but I knew that, despite the name, it was nowhere near the water!
Thanks—WOW! He is impressive.
As did I. The time period, ocean, admiral, British, all pointed to Nelson and Trafalgar. Thought it was actually fairly easy if one knows a bit of British history. Final Jeopardy quite often has built-in hints–the trick is deciphering them in what, 30 seconds??
Ryan has been posting on Twitter about his run. He is blirish_charm (his mom is black and his dad was Irish).
I was embarrassed for the Brit girl not knowing Trafalgar. Yikes.
And I’m sure Ryan is one of those bright people blessed with a photographic memory. James Holzhauer admitted to that as well.
Tournament of Champions this season should be epic. And still 8 more weeks left in the regular season.
Wow!
Ryan seemed slow on the buzzer today. Like Amy and Mattea, he seemed tired of the grind and ready to move on.
You almost feel sorry for the 4 day champs who qualify with a mere $100 grand. So many big winners this year.
There was a clue error last night. The first Daily Double, the clue was along the lines of "He lived near the Massachusetts Avenue subway stop on the Orange Line while pursuing his doctorate at Boston University.: It was MLK but the Massachusetts Avenue station did not exist until 1987 when the Orange Line was relocated.
Clue was:
Not an error. The clue was: Near the Mass. Ave. T stop on the Orange Line is where this man lived in the 1950s getting his theology Ph.D. at Boston University.
“Is” is present tense. That Mass Ave T stop today exists near where MLK lived.
From Ryan (posted on Twitter):
Also saw something online today about the tournament of champions bringing together contestants from the past 2 seasons. If I recall correctly, I think the tournament of champions for last season just included champions while Alex was still hosting. But maybe I am remembering that wrong. If its true, there would be champs from 2021 and 2022. Though if they keep it at 15 with the number of 10+ day champs this season, not sure how many will make it from 2021.
There was also talk of a Second Chance Tournament. And I think the plans were to have at least one contestant from that tournament make the tournament of champions. And the college tournament “winner” who did not qualify for the college tournament finals is supposed to be back in some capacity.
I really liked Ryan. Oh well. All good things must come to an end.
Buzzy hosted the last TOC–when was that aired, last fall???
(IMO he did an exemplary job)
I think the TOC last year aired in May. And I think (again if recalling correctly–which is sometimes asking too much) they had it earlier (this season’s TOC is airing in November I believe) because it was limited to contestants who won while Alex was host.
Buzzy did a great job. I didn’t think he had the right personality to host but he put himself in host mode rather than contestant mode and I think it worked well. Like Ken, his passion for the show was palpable.
