I haven't seen a NJGSS thread for the upcoming 2013 summer so I decided to make one. I know I'll be applying since I got nominated, but what about you guys?

P.S. For any past NJGSS'ers, how much do grades really count? I received a B in AP Chem for the first quarter of this year because of an issue which wasn't my fault at all (but NJGS/colleges don't know that -__-). My second quarter grades are up to about an A- but they won't come in on time anyways. Will this hurt me a lot? =/

Considering that much of the applicant pool is highly homogeneous as it is required/strongly recommended to be in top 5% with high SATs (and only 2 kids per school can apply), if you do not have any other significant achievements in your application, this B could be enough to push you into the reject pile.

first of, the number of kids that can apply is dependent on how large the school is so up to three people can be nominated if the school is big
second of, THEY DONT SEE YOUR FIRST QUARTER GRADES so chill …once you get in, they want the school to send in your FINAL GRADES
things happen first quarter its not fair if they judge your grades based on first quarter grades got it? so dont worry about that

third of, and the most important one, SHOW YOUR PASSION FOR SCIENCE and you’re in for sure…trust me, even in the lack of awards (although you should have some since lots of people will have awards and you dont have to list solely science awards LIST EVERY SINGLE AWARD AND EC YOU HAVE because they also want diverse group of people …why? well, from my experience, diversity in STEM is super important when it comes to thinking outside the box and crazy good ideas) IF YOU SHOW HOW MUCH YOU LOVE SCIENCE YOUR CHANCES GO UP DRAMATICALLY

PS- sry for the long parenthesis statement…hopefully you could still follow the third statement haha
I wish you best of luck :)

EDIT: holy shoot, dude…i just saw your princeton chance me thread…you have a lot of science awards and leadership plus other ECs …send in your SAT II scores as well…you dont have to send in your SAT scores, just your PSAT scores so hopefully you did well (>200 will suffice as long as you have super essays, which I bet you will have, good ECS, which you have, and awards, which you also have…i’m not sure what the pool is like this year, but I think you have pretty good chances so dont let the poster above me discourage you ^.^)

This is a weird question but I live in NYC - I know that technically I would not be qualified to apply to the governer’s school in NJ. But we don’t have one in NY and the closest one is in NY. I have relatives that live in NJ. Can I change my residency over the summer to their address to make it seem like I live in NJ and apply to the gov school there?

@ upsilon - Grades count as much as every part of the application. Given the stiff competition, the B can cost you some points but don’t let that keep you from applying.

@ holaworld Where did you get the idea that the school does not see your first quarter grades. If you read the instructions carefully you will see that these are part of the required information.

yeah @holaworld, unfortunately the first quarter grades are sent in, but thanks for the help and support haha !

@stemgeek, yeah I know the B can cost me, but I was just wondering if it would cost me a whole lot. I should have gotten a B+, but I didn’t want to argue with the teacher to preserve a strong first impression with her. idk if i can mention this somehow in my app =/

@NYCkevin, yeah i don’t think changing your address would help, especially since your school wouldn’t even be able to nominate you since you go to a NY school

@upsilon It’s very hard to say how much a B will cost as opposed to a B+. Grades is one component of that section. The number of science and math courses and the level of these courses are all important. Just do your best putting it all together.

I just finished my governors school application… I am really hoping to get in. I noticed on the application that PSATs had to be in 90th percentile… I am in the 79th percentile for writing… the 85th percentile for critical reading and the 95th percentile for math… since this is a science program i was hoping they would only look at the math… but tell me what you all think… does this ruin my shoy of getting in?

P.S. all other requirements I meet with extensive credentials…

they look at everything. I believe they allocate points to each part of your application, as in PSATs count for like 5 points, grades are like 10, ECs are like 10, etc. (those numbers are arbitrary btw, idk how much each actually counts).
With that said, mostly everyone had stellar PSAT scores and grades. They also rank you guys from 1-400 and then they accept the top 85 or whatever (they also consider geographic diversity so if you’re from a less represented county then that might help).
Then they showed us a chart that correlated your rank (x-axis) with your PSAT math scores (y-axis). There WERE PSAT math scores lower than 70 (not a lot, and including mine lol) so don’t let that deter you from applying. There were also kids with perfect PSAT math scores who got rejected. So really, one part of your application will neither make you nor break you.

did anyone receive a confirmation email yet? my friend received hers from Rutgers school of
technology and engineering and i’m afraid mine may not have gotten to the office.

My daughter received her confirmation email on 1/22/13 saying her application was complete and applicants will be notified via email on 4/4/13. But it was forwarded from her guidance counselor. Not sure why she didn’t get the email directly.
