New Jersey schools

I have an associate degree in chemistry with a 3.73GPA, however I’ve had a few horrible semesters at my current school (hurricanes, money issues, and a huge riot at my school), so my transcript at this school looks disgusting. I have a 3.63 GPA, but I have an exaggerated amount of w’s (12) Most of them, because I dropped an entire semester before moving to the other school and then came back.

I am moving to New Jersey and I was wondering what my chances are for Rutgers, Rowan, Stockton, Montclair, Kean and NJCU. My number one choice is Rowan, but I’m scared I don’t have a chance.

I think you will have a chance at Rowan. But you should try to explain the W’s.

There seems to be an effort to diversify in the sciences at Rowan. They are very interested in female and URM applicants.

I’m also latina lol. I have no idea if they care about that. I believe I don’t won’t have to explain some of them since they know Puerto Rico was destroyed by a hurricane, but I will anyway, just in case. Thank you so much!

I’m sorry to hear you were affected by the situation in PR.

I wish you well. I think they would love to have you at Rowan.

Rowan’s reputation has steadily been growing over the years. Has a good future, so I wish you the best.

I agree with the above posters. Explain why you had to withdraw. The explanation you gave above sounds quite reasonable.

I’d avoid Rowan. I do not attend, but I have friends that do, and they honestly are very displeased with the school.

The school does not give a flying you know what about the students’s mental health (you can view a number of articles/petitions about this). Plus, I feel as though the school is ridiculously priced for in-state students and for the education it offers… ~$30k.

I don’t know, but I would consider schools such as William Paterson, Ramapo, etc. in NJ. They offer much more and are more reasonably priced.

That’s so sad. Rowan it’s one of my first choices since ny mom is 15 minutes away from it and my family said it was a nice school. I agree mental health is important. I am going to do some research. Thanks!

Don’t rule Rowan out! I know many students who are very happy there! It’s an up and coming school with a ton of money being invested into it. Do the research, not sure what these articles or petitions are and where one can find them. Best to talk to students that actually go there to get a feel for it. Good luck!

@Stephaniiiie
Also, if your commuting because you can stay with family, that brings your cost of attendance down to around $15k for tuition and fees, I believe.

I would really seek out reviews from various sources and also in the department you are interested in. If there are mental health or any disabilities, I’d look into those resources carefully, too.

I don’t live far from Rowan and I know students who have attended and many parents who have had their children attend, and to be honest, I have only heard negative feedback in the case of one student and that criticism was very specific. She was in a challenging program and didn’t feel she was getting the academic help she needed. But she is still in the program. Everyone else has been very happy.

It’s just my opinion, but it’s hard to believe Ramapo or William Patterson would offer more than Rowan unless it’s in a particular speciazed program that I’m unfamiliar with.

I know nothing about mental health resources at Rowan because I haven’t felt the need with D18 and if anything came up, I would find private resources because we are local. I have an older child who needed disability support in college and I know from experience that it’s very important. In the college search she specifically sought out small colleges and I vetted them to see which ones could best provide the resources she needed to be successful. A bigger university would have made me nervous, but many students don’t have a choice because of major or financial limits.

My mom is in New Jersey, but I don’t know if will be considered an in-state student, since my mom has’nt lived there for an entire year. She will be in September.

I wont rule any school out, since I know I’m not a bright student lol. I’m in no place to be picky and I’d be happy to get into any school at this point. I’m in the best university in Puerto Rico, but as much as I love it, I’m aware most of these schools I’ll apply to are much better. It’s hard to disappoint me after all I’ve been trough.

All it takes is a Google search to see what I am talking about.

Anyways, what is your end goal career/major-wise??

@aznboi4981 Ok, I see what you are talking about. I think that brings up a good point for us all to think about, whether it’s Rowan or anywhere.

There was a suicide in my oldest D’s dormitory. It was very traumatic.

Other important things to ask about, besides the accessibility of counseling, is if there is a cost and if there is a limit on number of sessions. I never imagined there were costs or limits on therapy on college campuses until I read there can be.

@MACmiracle I just find a waitlist for mental health services to be rather unconscionable. I know for a fact that this is not the case at my school.

I would like to study pharmacy. I don’t know if I’ll be able to tho.

@stefaniiiie Don’t discount Rowan on that basis, unless you know you are in need of mental health counseling. My son is a freshman at Rowan and loving his experience. There have been suicides at both of my children’s high schools; sadly it has become an epidemic in this generation. Rowan is trying to address the backlog; the school has grown by leaps and bounds and there are growing pains. I haven’t seen anything that states this particular student had been on a waitlist, but I could be wrong. Either way, it’s a non-issue, thankfully, for my son. He loves his classes, he’s made a ton of friends and is doing great.
William Paterson is no where near the same quality of education at Rowan. And it is also primarily a commuter campus. Rutgers is extremely strong in the sciences, and Stockton is as well. Ramapo, based on my son’s acceptance, it the most expensive of the in-state NJ options (sticker of almost $35k on what we received last year). Rowan can also be among the more generous with merit aid.
Good luck in your search!

@NJWrestlingmom
Any school that has a waitlist for mental health services in this day and age is most definitely an issue. Everyone has different experiences at their school, but my friends speak fervently against Rowan.

Also, I believe you are confusing Ramapo with Rider. Ramapo’s tuition is nowhere near 35k. Again, a quick Google search is all it takes. Plus, Ramapo is in the best area out of all of the NJ schools. I don’t go to Ramapo, but I hear great things. (Phenomenal teaching and nursing programs. And I see they have a program for Pharmacy, which OP is looking for).

Oh, and let me add merit aid is a completely ballgame when it comes to transfers. So to your last part of your message, it does not apply to OP.

completely different ballgame**

@aznboi4981 my son didn’t apply to Rider. He applied and was accepted Ramapo with no merit and the letter we received had total cost of attendance (including fees, books, etc) well over $30,000. It was within $2,000 of him attending a VT state school at the out of state rate.

And Ramapo is not the best NJ state school. Rutgers and TCNJ both beat Ramapo hands down. The rest can be argued, although for engineering Rowan is coming on strong.

My son and all his friends speak fervently for Rowan. To each his own.
