Hey all.

I'm transferring into CC '12. Coming from my last school, Jersey kids got a bit of a hard time. There were a lot of us, and we tended to be stereotyped and mocked. It was just kind of annoying.

I noticed that a lot of New Jerseyans also go to Columbia. Are there any prevailing attitudes/jokes directed at the Jersey students there? Is it something that anyone even pays attention to?

I’m not at Columbia yet, but from what I can tell it’s quite diverse – I doubt you’ll have any issues.

What school did you come from?

People from New Jersey have enough problems; no one needs to add to them.

You’ll be more than fine.

^the kid is transferring from GW, sucks to hear that, I have a few friends who are there. But expect to made fun of for coming from Jersey, it’s just normal camaraderie, no stereotyping or anything. If they come from California, you can always say that your state isn’t yet bankrupt ;). and if they say North Dakota or something, you can always ask: “sorry where again?”

NJ is one of the most repres states at Col, so don’t worry about it, you’ll only have a problem if you take yourself very seriously, otherwise you’ll really like that people poke fun at you (for NJ or CC/SEAS or living in a certain dorm), it’s a sign of familiarity. It means they are thinking about you, and don’t think you’re made of glass.

I didn’t know you could be from jersey and have thin skin :P

No thin skin here, it really isn’t a big deal. It has gotten to the point where the “America’s armpit” comment is nearly a complement.

But really, I definitely understand the camaraderie thing, and it can really help break the social ice. I am not the type of person who loses sleep over something like this. I actually enjoy playful-making fun of people based on almost meaningless stereotypes - which ironically might be a jersey thing?

I was just trying to get a gage of the prevailing social norms/attitudes. I guess I also need to get used to the fact that I’m never going to be able to go somewhere, say, I’m from NJ, and get that sort of surprised “Oh, that’s interesting!” I’ll just need to work a little harder : P
