New Kellogg MS program (only NU undergrads can apply)

Russell Fellows | Kellogg School of Management | Northwestern University

Surprised nobody responded to this…how do you all think this compares with an MBA/MMSS/Kellogg certificate? Is it worth doing if u have the kellogg certificate? Is it made for those w/o it that want to be put on equal footing as those who do? I am not exactly sure of its purpose, but it sounds really cool.

From whatever I could gather, this program cannot offset the MBA program offered by Kellogg school. This MS program is geared towards entry level jobs. Looks like a step up from the certificate program and steps down from a regular MBA.

That’s what I was thinking. Is the drawback just that its another year’s worth of time and tuition?

This is mostly for people with not-so-marketable majors that want to break into finance, marketing, and consulting. It’s of higher-level than undergrad business but below MBA.

Kellogg cert is a different animal; it’s advanced, highly quantitative, but narrow in focus - either financial economics or managerial analytics. All the students took 7-8 pre-requisite courses in stats, probability, econometrcs, and honors math/calculus. I heard that while the courses are supposedly identical to the equivalent ones MBA students take, the professors at times would dig deeper because for the undergrads because they have more math background. The undergrads also score better than the Kellogg MBAs in the same exams!!

People with the Kellogg certificates are very highly sout after; they don’t really need this for job placement.

if you just get an econ degree, would enrolling in this program be a wise choice?

It sounds to me like this is the closer thing to a traditional Business degree for NU students, whereas the certificate is way more focused. That’s just what I got from it at least.

^^depends on what you mean by “wise”. if you are talking about getting a job, well, it’ll be an alternative that should help if by graduation, you still haven’t got a job in business. that’s assuming it’s financially feasible.

what if you have a job in business, but are moving to make yourself more credible in order to move up the ladder?

your job performance will matter more than having this MS degree, i think. then there are all these MBA programs that may be useful for career changers. but for people who are already in business, getting an MBA is usually not worth it unless it’s from places like Harvard, Kellogg, etc.
