I currently have a Dell laptop and it's pretty heavy. It's 17 inches and it has a little back-stand thing on the back. I was wondering if most students carry their laptops to class and if it's best to. Should i buy a new laptop? And if yes, do you guys have any recommendations?

lots of students do carry their laptops to class, but most of those students shouldn’t – they have gchat and facebook and a million other tabs open, and spend most of their class time not paying attention to the lecture. if you think you’re likely to be distracted, turn off wifi or go to pen and paper.

^ agree

i never bring my laptop to class. unless it’s a notes-intensive class, don’t bring it.
even if it’s notes-intensive, i think hand written notes are better.
if you’re worried about being out of place if you don’t have your laptop, you won’t be.

I definitely wouldn’t buy a new laptop. Like astrina and ucsdlee said, you won’t necessarily take it to class much and even if you did I wouldn’t suspect the trip to class and back would be unmanageable. If you REALLY wanted you could possibly buy a cheap netbook but I think you’ll be fine otherwise. I would wait until you get here to make that decision though to see what you think will be best.

Like everyone else has said, you really don’t need to bring your laptop to class, a pen and paper works just as well, if not better.

I actually carry my macbook with me almost everywhere around campus though because I go to geisel in between classes since it’s a hassle to keep going back to my apartment. And it does get pretty heavy midday w/ all the books/notebooks I’m carrying too. But it’s not so bad that you need to buy a new computer. If it does get really bad, just use the computers at geisel. There’s plenty.
